Re: SL350 Super Moto-Sport Project - It's Done! Ride Report.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

I started cleaning the frame today. I did some grinding and some scotch briting and filing and bead blastin on it. The Honda factory sure was sloppy welding the frame together, I've knocked about a million nibs off the thing. It's getting there. I also removed the hubs and cleaned and glass beaded them for paint and new Aluminium wheels and ss spokes.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

Painted the hubs. They are getting laced to a set of Honda XL350 rear wheels 18x3's. The wheels will be satin black to match the hubs with SS spokes.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

The crankcase on the 71 - up SL350 was re-designed. The gaskets for the generator cover and clutch cover from the CB/CL350 kit doesn't line up as shown in the first two pictures. FYI. I used the correct gasket on the clutch side and Yamabond on the other.

I assembled the carburetors and mocked them up with the Unifilters for a photo.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

After soaking in WD-40 for a while the timing advancer came apart.

Oh yeah, I still need to install the chokes and linkage on the carbs. I need to clean and paint them. I didn't use lemon juice, just soak in gasoline and scrub, then glass bead. Carb cleaner also works great.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

Thanks for the comments!

I finally got the frame and swinger down to bare metal so I can prime and paint it.

I had my machinist (pops) turn a set of urethane lower shock bushings.

Started removing paint from the fins. I will replace that pitted points cover.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

shit looks sick. that jug/cam cover color is amazing. really pops with the polished fins.

so how exactly do you machine poly bushings? thats sounds infinitely useful.

Thank you!

The polyurethane material comes in a round bar so you can cut it in a lathe. As you can see there is a shoulder on these so I will need to narrow the width of the mounting bosses on the swing arm slightly. The bushing won't need an inner sleeve because I will use a bolt with just enough thread to tighten into the shock. I'll post picture when they are finalized.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

Baking the VHT Caliper Paint on the hubs

Frame is painted and wheels are getting powder coated and then laced soon

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

Great work so far man. Fantastic job with the paint. Also not the biggest fan of colored motors, but very unique. Unique is always good, can't wait to see it on the bike. Keep it up

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

Frame is painted. I'm going to get the swing arm and fork installed and bolt the lump in next.

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

that motor looks so awesome.

constructive criticism? I think you should paint the valve spring covers a different color, or polish them or something.

Of course always welcome from you fellas...I was thinking the same thing myself. Break up the orange. My stuff is always a work in progress and I'll change it up mid-stream if think of a cooler way...

I was looking at the fork tubes tonight an they are pitted up so was thinking maybe go with a different set if I can find some with a dual disc that will fit. Gotta decide soon cuz the front drum hub is getting laced soon so do I get some fresh tubes for the orig drum or find some mod tubes with caliper mounts and disc wheel???

Anybody know any that will slide into the 33mm trees or do I pitch the whole thing and use a complete unit with discs???

Re: SL350 Super Motorsport Project

A 75 or 76 CB360 has disc brakes in the front and has 33mm upper forks, if thats what you are asking.
