CX500 minor bob job - whooooot issues solved goes like a bat out of hell, for an old bike at least

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

If you want an inexpensive but improvement over stock, remove the Hbox and put Harley sporster mufflers on.......MikesXS sells their own brand of pod filters that do not have an internal lip which helps on the top end.......cheap but effective and actually sounds pretty good. The harley cans can be found all over for super cheap, just get your local muffler guy to bend you a small section that would replace the distance of pipe where the Hbox was to go through the brake pedal area and weld on the muffler to the down pipe

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

Cool, thanks, I know the sporters cans are cheap as chips. If budget allows we'll do it or something similar. Have to see if it needs the triple bypass or anything else major first.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

Hastings rocks. You can basically get any ring for any engine from them. They just need the specs, and they can supply them.

I figure that with the airbox modifications I did, it should flow almost as freely as pods. The air filter is quite large. Most of the restriction was built into the airbox, and the stock paper filter. I'll use the old filter, (which was in good shape and clean,) as the intake filter on my air compressor.

This bike will keep the H pipe, but the stock mufflers are already gone. It has shorties on it. Sounds pretty good, actually. Has a nice growl, but not too loud.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

I would suggest that you not remove the crossover. Performance is better with the crossover in place, unless you go to a 2-into-1 exhaust.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

Yep I read that too, I think exhaust will stay stock for this coming season, with maybe a change in mufflers only, then we'll see what next winter brings if the bike stays in the family etc.

I gotta agree to a point, if you're not doing much then leave the cross over box in place. But.....it's pig-iron heavy and also really restrictive. The best we did on the 650 was 1.625"(sorry metric kats....) pipes with a simple crossover pipe of the same diameter, more or less under the swinger pivot and a pair of small canisters. It netted some power verified by improved 0-60 times, lost weight too. Just a thought. A good tuned 2-1 would do nicely, most aftermarket exhausts aren't actually tuned.....would support an improvement over a broader rpm range.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

Yep 2-1 is the ticket if changing entire exhaust happens for sure. And the crossover is cast iron so yes weight could be saved for sure. I have not looked to see what is out there for aftermarket but my wifes uncle is a pro-welder and I am sure I can convince him to make a nice set out of stainless when the time comes.

No question about it. It weighs a ton, and a simple crossover would do a better job.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

Well progress. Many parts removed and the red ale i made is very good already.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

More done. Lets build a cowel to house the tail and ty in the seat. Hide the mounting bolts and have some more colour. Pics:

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Now it runs

So I will french in the tail light. And use velcro to hold the cowel on. Have to wait for a warm day to take it out to the garage to lay the glass so I dont stink up the house.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - seat ideas

hi-tech seat photo shop idea. We're thinking orange tank and seat cowl and dropping the side covers.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Ideas, making a cowl but not a cafe

Well got a few minutes with the bike. Did the cut out and recess for the tail lite. It is supposed to hit above freezing sunday so I hope to glass the cowl then and then the frame can be wire wheeled etc.

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Ideas, making a cowl but not a cafe

And under glass. Shit smelled up the whole house so I have to seal up the doors to the garage better b4 the next time I glass something. Its 2-3 layers thick depending on were and with some bondo should be just right to finish off the Back end and house tail light and wiring.

Fiberglass is a black art

Re: Cx500 minor bob job - Seat Ideas, making a cowl but not a cafe

It may be a black art but I am getting bettee at it. All trimmed up with a coat of body filler. Sanded and some spot putty. Once that dries I will sand and then hit with filler primer and see all the spots I missed.
