XS750 progress

Less is more
I mocked up the exhaust to see how I want to mount it. I'm not too happy with how it came out. I think I'm going to trim back the 3-1 collector a bit more to try to clean it up a bit. Once I like where the muffler sits I'll sand blast the headers and have my buddy weld it all in to place.

I'm almost done with the 18" front wheel conversion. I just need to finish fabricating the 2.5mm spacers for the rotors. Once the brakes and exhaust are finished I'll sort out the tank and petcocks. Both are leaking as of right now. Then I'll have to work on a better way to mount the seat.

Once it is all together and I have the right blueprint, I'll tear it all down for paint. Still haven't decided on how to paint it. At first I wanted to go with gold wheels and a silver tank, Now I'm considering gloss black with white Norton style graphics. I have plenty of time to figure all of that out though.

Don't mind the mallet, I was just using it to give a little angle on the muffler.

You will LOVE the sound of that exhaust with the triple. I'm running the same megaphone with a Kerker exhaust on my 850 triple.

Did a little more work today. Finished the spacers for the front wheel. Also, I wasn't happy with the placement of the muffler so I trimmed more of the collector and I'm much happier with how it looks. Mock up is done. Now I have to make it look nice again. I will have a lot of sandblasting to do.

Here are some quick updates to the XS750. Sorry about the crapy cell phone pics. I'll take some better shots over the weekend.

Finished up the brakes. Rebuilt the calipers, added stainless lines from slingshot, polished the rear arm and the fork legs. Stripped the paint on the tank. Sanded it from 120-2,000 and clear coated it. I'm very happy with how it came out. I sandblasted all of the rust off the exhaust, Welded up a few holes, painted it with POR high heat, and wrapped it. I still have to weld the mount on the muffler, but I should have that done by this weekend. I added some longer struts in the rear from Mikes XS. It brings the back end up a little more and gives it a more aggressive stance. I did plenty more here and there but it all escapes me right now. A lot of removing rust with the wire wheel and plenty of painting.

I still have a ton to do. I would say I'm about half way there.

I'm not sure what I want to do with the wheels. I was going to powdercoat them gold, but now I may go silver. I'm on the fence. A gloss black could look good too.

Sweet looking triple! Can't wait to get started on mine. Bringing it home tonight.

A detailed account of how you mounted up that XS400 wheel would be super helpful. I want to do the same.

I'll try my best to give you the details but I'll have to look through some receipts to get you the specs. If I remember correctly the xs400 front wheel is 5mm skinnier than the xs750. I used the xs750 axle and added a 2.5mm spacer to the side of the bolt. I had to machine down the dust cover on the none bolt side of the axle. You don't have to use a 2.5mm spacer on that side because the axle can just slide 2.5mm further in to the forks. I made two 2.5mm spacers for the brake disks. The most difficult part was finding new bearings that had an outer diameter of the xs400 hub and the inner diameter of the xs750 axle. If I remember correctly the size was 17x42x13. It was a real strange size and I had to get them shipped from japan. I'm not sure what the measurements are for the XS850. They may be the same as the XS750, but I would get your calipers out and take a lot of measurements.

As far as my XS750 goes, I have some more wet-sanding of the clear coat to do and then I'll take some better pictures. I have to go through the wiring harness and replace the clutch cable. After that it may be test ride time. I'll keep you posted on the results.

really great looking so far, I just got an xs750 so hopefully mine will be looking as good as this one soon.

Thanks! It still has a long way to go. I'm happy with how far I have come but I don't think it's going to be road worthy until next season.

I still have to sort out what speedo and tach I'm going to go with (probably Danmoto), I have to make a tail support, button up the wiring and instruments, Sort out the clutch and t-cables, I want to powder coat the rims a light gold, I need to polish the carbs-triple tree- and engine covers, I have to finish welding the bracket on the muffler, and wet sand and buff the tank just to name a few things. Not to mention test and tune.

Last but not least, take better pictures.

Here are some updated photos. Still not great, but the best I could do with the crap weather outside. I finished clear coating, wet sanding, buffing, and waxing the tank. It came out OK. I'm not 100% satisfied, but since I'm going for more of a raw look, I think it will do. Next up is polishing and shaving the engine cases, carbs, and triple. Still plenty of room for improvement.

man, you are about 3 steps ahead of me and my 750, looking absolutely awesome. What kind of gauges did you end up going with? And I am making my seat now, how did you end up attaching it? I am almost completely finished grinding off all of those unnecessary clips.

Thats a spare tach I had left over from another project. I still think I'm going to end up going with a Danmoto gauge. As far as mounting the seat, I haven't mounted it yet. It is just sitting on there. My plan is to build a steel brace for it and then bolt it to some brackets I'm going to weld to the frame.

awesome, I saw another guy make a brace across the bottom of the seat with some permanent screws coming out from underneath. Then there is a support beam on the xs750 that goes right across where the seat sits. He drilled 2 holes there for the seat screws to go through and just holds the thing on with small wing nuts. Pretty simple idea... only problem is you have to unscrew those nuts to get under the seat.

Just a few updated pictures. Painted the wheels, polished side covers and Cam cover, shaved the top tree, relocated ignition switch, Danmoto gauge, and raised up the forks. The polishing came out OK. The aluminum was very pitted and I couldn't get it perfect. I still need to polish a few other bits and I want to paint the Jugs black. This was just a mock up. I still have to put the magneto back together.

Sorry for the bad phone pictures. I'll try to get something better when I take it out for a test ride.

Some recent updates. Took it on a quick test ride and it was awesome! Sounded amazing. The front brake needs adjustment and I need to wire up turn signals. I'm also going to need to find some mirrors and a mount for the tag. Sorry for the bad cell phone pics. I'll have to take some with a decent camera soon.

I haven't posted any updates in a while. Here are some updated pics below. Not all that great, but at least it is something. Added some Velocity stacks from steel dragon. Carbs are running 140 main jets from the stock 130s. Engine runs great. Plenty of pep. Sounds like a dump truck down low and like an indie car in the higher RPMs.

Welded up a tag mount and added turn signals under the seat. I'll have to run a supplemental signal and brake light off the tag since they are difficult to see in the daylight.

Fabed up some rear set brackets out of 1/2 inch aluminum plate. Threw on some torrazi rear sets and made some linkage using mcmaster carr hardware.

I'm the worst at logging the work I have done so I'm sure I'm missing a bunch of stuff.

That thing is begging for drilled rotors, otherwise it looks fantastic!
I agree. I would love to make them just like the ones on my CB350 build, but it is a heavy bike and I want as much braking surface as I can get. I haven't rulled it out though.
