Simple XS

Coast to Coast
So I traded my 73 triumph spitfire with a toyota drivetrain for a 1980 XS650. Wiring might as well have been missing, it had a tail hoop that was made out of some chrome shower tube or something, but it is titled running and riding. It has a homemade exhaust that looks decent, but it's going to look much better soon.

So far I have put a proper hoop on it, lowered the forks 2", got a 19" wheel for the back and made 1 of the 2 adapters, swapped to superbike bars and removed the wiring.

Still to go is remove the electrics tray and make my own, wire it properly, detab the frame fully, and shorten fenders.

Hopefully it'll go fast as this is a bike I'll probably sell once it's done.

Love it. I always love your projects, especially with all the manually cranked alloy chips.

Thanks! If I had a cnc I'd use the heck out of it, but I'm happy to have my own manual machines so that I can actually make things. Without them I either couldn't afford to get the custom parts made, or I would have to go just bolt on.

Wheel adapters are done.

So, no worries about running a cush? That's a debate I can never figure out what side to be on.

The stock xs spoked rear wheels aren't cush from the factory. I found that strange as well.

Do they dampen the counter sprocket in some way? I don't speak XS.

They do not. I'm using a shouldered xs rear wheel for my bobber. It's bolted directly to the hub, no damping whatsoever

No xs650 came with a cush. They have damper rubbers and springs on the clutch hub. So no cush is normal. My other one has a cush, don't know if it makes a difference.

Why do you keep bringing up the hub? LOL. The counter sprocket is on the engine.

I imagine damping the clutch may be their way of dealing with it. I was just looking at an XR650L, which has no cush hub, and it had a trashed counter sprocket shaft. Pretty common with those bikes. That's what makes me ask.

Sorry, I missed that while I was eating cracker barrel and feeling lethargic. Lol

"Rebuilding" a set of rfy shocks. Hoping that proper fluid level and nitrogen charge will make them perform better than stock shocks. I'm not expecting hagon or ohlins level performance, just better than 29yr old stockers.

1.5" stretch is done. At this rate I'll be able to ride this bike before the end of summer.

Swingarm is mounted, 19" rear wheel needs to move 8.5mm left to line up the sprockets and center the wheel. With the bike supported by machinist jacks the shocks will need to be adjusted to 335mm to get the seat level.

Overall it's moving along quickly, I'm gong to modify a stock seat as I like padding. The front end has a 320mm ducati rotor mounted with a 16mm spacer, it'll get a yamaha blue spot caliper. The rear brake is a modified ruckus rotor with a fz1 caliper on a fzr400rr bracket.
