If they're working well, no, I don't think you need to worry about them. But, solid state regulator/rectifier units are better and more reliable to ensure the sensitive lithium battery is charged properly.

Most of the time, yes. Upper voltages on the old regulators can be as high as 15.5V and that's a lot more than what LI-ION usually likes to see. Some of the batteries will have internal electronics to help combat voltage overages, but I usually just find it easier to replace the R/R with a modern unit since it's a relatively cheap upgrade anyway.
