Cb450 breaks up at 2k, stumped... any guesses?

If he's running stock carbs you can't shim them.

Does the breakup happen all the time or just under load?

You asked about the straw test on another thread, did they pass? You can watch the slides rise and fall with the engine running and running up the throttle slowly. If they don't you have issues with the carbs.
 
Hi Frogman, the breakup happens whenever I rev from idle. I have her apart again and am checking valves, timing again. -D
 
A common problem was point bounce at a certain harmonic. Check the spring tension, and alignment. With a timing light does it flutter at the rpm? Is the point cam lubricated?
