Big Bro's Yamaha TX500

There's 3 bolts under there and if not tight lil oil will leak out !

made a little headway on my brothers bike last night.. as you can see we also picked up a midnight edition xv750 virago we are going to get started on as well.. i tried talking my bro (nick) out of doing the rear monoshock on his bike but he was pretty reluctant he wanted it.. so we did some fabbing and mocking up some stuff last night... nice the rear wheel with stock spacers fit right into the mono swingarm, no mods necessary.

You just became my new best friend! Im doing the same style swap with an xs400. Your setup looks spot on!

nice work, be good to see it when its finished

thems some scary bent forks in that 3rd pic tho

yep those were on the virago when we picked it up.. it was originally purchased from a police auction because it was abandoned on a really busy street here in grand rapids, right near a bar.. so obviously im assuming the guy crashed cause he was wasted, but was not seriously injured because he left the scene! lucky. guess he figured a virago isnt worth a dui, which i completely agree, lol

hey all, just gonna toss out some updates on my brothers bike, we had a little time this weekend to do some work, get the mock up and do some welding to get the rear mono shock fitted and finished.. we took a pretty thick piece of sheet metal and cut it to size to slide up and in between the rear tubes, so it sits nice and flush on the bottom, matched up some steel for the two mounting points and found a good spot and shock angle.. got everything welded into place and it sits nicely, and shock seems to be in a good spot.. also through a seat top on there just for a visual, as well as taped an bent piece of tubing for a visual of the support we are going to add. thoughts, comments, random insults?

Is that shock going to travel ok? It might just be the picture but it looks like it mounts at a odd angle thats gonna put alot of stress on that upper mount. Seat looks killer!

Whats the swingarm off of that youre using? Does it use linkage for the monoshock? Just wondering how you mounted the linkage to the xs400's frame if you had to deal with linkage

Duct tape, handyman's secret weapon. Unless looks are a factor ;) Nice work so far man!

Yeah it doesn't look like it's on enough of an angle like we had talked about... After we welded it in, hah. Anyways we are gonna put it a little further forward to give it a little more clearance, but it is functioning properly. The swing arm is off a mid 90's Honda cr 500 dirt bike, and we are using the shock linkage, with some slight modification for the lower doggone to hook up to the lower of the frame.

Think you could snap a couple shots of that lower dogbone setup for me? I am trying to decide how to build the lower mount onto my frame. You're seat design looks like it could easily have a tube ran horizontally through it to work as a mounting position for the shock bracket, but its good the shock is working how it is supposed to!

yeah i should be out in the shop working on the bikes in a day or two ill get some shots for you to give you an idea of whats going on down there.

here is a quick picture you can see how its all coming together.. obviously we are going to be using a more legit setup than this.. but this temporary setup worked really well to find the right ride height we wanted to achieve. the mounts on the frame are from the large kick stand i believe.. not sure if my bro is planning on using those, but it can def handle the weight cause we were bouncing on the bike and even with this half arse setup it could handle all of my 215lbs of abuse bouncing on it. hope this helps!

finally a little update here, my brother has been super busy lately but we had a chance to mess around and do some work on the frame yesterday.. so we removed the upper shock mounts and moved them forward to get a better angle, welded in some side bend supports, and got everything detabbed the way we liked it. frame looks good. now just searching the market for a sport bike front end.

I don't mean to jump in and criticize. But I really dont think that suspension geometry is going to work. while it might work in the shop, riding down the road is another story all together... just taking a turn at speed will really put a rear shock through the paces. I suggest you do a little research on spring rates and geometry before trusting your life with what you have now.

That being said, Good Luck, I love the TX500, great bike, I love your direction too, the MX swinger is a cool look.

no I'm glad you're here to criticize. which pic are you referring to? the old setup didn't have a good spring able that's for sure, so we removed and revised it. it's now at a further forward angle and welded in pretty extensively. thoughts?
