1980 Yamaha SR250 - A Tracker named Mexico

A few last bits sripped and primed. Had to buy a footpeg hanger and peg off Ebay as the left hand side one was a cheap POS. Both should now look good sprayed black with their new rubbers on. Stripped the tank today and filled in a couple of small dents. After several hours of hand sanding the old paint off, I decided that all future tanks will be blasted. I'm hoping to have the tank and rear fender finished by Friday evening.

This is the tank after second lot of priming and sanding, as you can see there are still a few tiny imperfections that I want to take out before moving on to the top coat. I find circling the areas needing attention with permanent maker helps me keep track of them when using wet and dry, and it gives me an idea of how much paint I'm removing. Also here is my front fender with a test strip of my stripes (thrown on so please ignore the bubbles). I quite like them, what do you think? I intend to have them down the centre of both fenders and the tank.

Stripes look good man.

Are you planning on the tank being plain apart from the centre stripes?

Yeah, well apart from new original Yamaha emblems on the sides to replace the old scratched ones.

ahh ok, sweet!

Was thinking that a nice black pinstripe/loop the same thickness as the smallest stripe would look good on the side of that tank.

Loving that orange! Really pops!

Yeah I'm glad I stuck with the orange - I nearly changed to metallic green at the last minute.

The inspiration for the name of my project: The Ford Escort Mexico Mk1 - in it's day, it was the car to have.

Just traded my KE100 for one of these. Hope it turns out as well as yours looks man.

Cheers J, Good luck with your build, these bikes are great platforms for a project.

You definitely weren't kidding about that swingarm bolt being a real turd to get out.

Yeah it took me a good few hours of effort to get mine out. You may probably already know this, but when you get the bike fully stripped down it may look like the frame is bent - it isn't - it was designed with one side of the bottom rail shorter than the other.

Rear fender done. the tank is halfway there, still needs more paint, more rubbing down, striping and lacquering.
