1980 Yamaha SR250 - A Tracker named Mexico

paint it black and you will hardly notice it. stiffens the forks as well as keeping water off.

The original idea was to match the front and rear mudguards to the tank (orange with black centre stripes), but while sat staring at it this afternoon (instead of getting on with the build) I also thought black might be better. I'll have to sit and stare at it some more....

+1 for painting the fender black. That's what I did to mine and now its not particularly noticeable.

After a little more staring (and beers) I decided to go with orange and paint it black later if I didn't like it. I think I like it. It still needs a final rub down, decals applied and clear coating. If anyone is interested, I cut 4" off the back and 7.5" off the front.

My new stickers arrived for my bar switches today. I've stripped down both switches, cleaned up the contacts and wiring, repainted the bottom halves gloss black, stripped and polished the top halves and applied the new decals. Here is the left hand one: (should have both done tomorrow, along with the levers).

Still not sure about this front mudguard. Maybe I'll have a better idea when the tank and rear mudguard are painted and mounted. I might keep it off and fit it for the winter. Also, I'm thinking of not bothering with the black stripes.

That there reminds me of a KTM Adventure ! JM2C but a fork brace would help out alot not only in handleing but look ;D

I am not sure about the front fender it is ill-proportioned. Maybe if the back half was the same size as the front? You would have no holes to mount the cables to though. Just my opinion

Thanks for the comments on the front fender guys, I'll think it over again when the tank and rear fender are on. My handlebars are coming along nicely. Stripped the lever mounts, undercoated and sprayed black, added new levers, new chrome cable adjusters and stainless bolts:

Finished lacing my powder coated wheels with new stainless spokes today, and I'm very happy with them. You can see from the pic below that I used my old swingarm and a pencil to get them true. It takes a while, but it saved me £80 and I have the satisfaction of knowing I did it myself. I'll be getting the tubes and tyres fitted tomorrow.

SteveG -- those spokes look awfully long coming through the nipples -- did you have to trim them?

Oh, yeah -- another question (and not the last...), I'm not familiar with the term "tracker." What's it mean?

Thanks!

Bart

Hi Bartbrn, That’s a bit of an optical illusion mate, it's just the light shining off the rims just behind the nipples, the spokes didn't actually protrude from the nipples. Tracker is a American term for a style of bike popular over there. If you search Google images for "tracker" you'll see many examples of naked bikes with flattish bars and seats. My bike is not strictly a tracker, but it fits better into this section of the forum than anywhere else.

It's the little things that make me happy. Here is my new centre mounted tax disc holder, it's a stainless back and chrome front:

Sweet build. I wish it was easier to find 250 bikes around me, I'd like to build something like this.

Sorry if I missed it, but where did you get your indicators? I have the same ones except they don't have the frame stand offs, which would be nice to have.

Hi Damarble, thanks mate. The indicators were found on ebay, should still be there. I searched for bullet indicators. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MINI-CUSTOM-CHROME-BULLET-STYLE-INDICATORS-1LONG-1SHORT-/120620877316?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item1c15908604

Nice build :) ! Just my 2c, wait until you have the motor / tank / rear fender on before you make a choice on the front guard, until you have all that gear on she will always look like skinny chick with a big head ;)
