1974 Yamaha TX-500.....Rebuild time!!

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

I read your opening post to the wife. She laughed at the part about the "evil eye". I am pretty sure we have all been there with at least one bike purchase. I know I have.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Happens to me every time I say " I seen this bike..." LoL
The 500 is coming nicely man and the Tiger looks like fun !

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Installed headlight and rear blinkers which leads to a question. Is it possible to run just rear blinkers or do I need to use front ones as well to complete a circuit? If that makes any sense........
Im really not wanting to run front ones.

Engine is in. I decided not to paint or polish the engine (except for a few parts were painted). I did this for two reasons:
1. I like the aged look of the engine. I have always painted my engines and this one I thought I would leave it original.
2. I am way to damn lazy to want to have to take the whole thing apart and polish or paint it. Honesty at its best.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

coming along nicely!

I just sold my Xs500, i kinda miss it now hehe

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

If you're using the original Yamaha harness, not only do you need both front and back turn signals, they need to be the exact same wattage as the originals. Otherwise they won't blink, they just stay on. When we put together one of my spare bikes for my buddy, we ran into that problem. Also, you kinda should run something you can at least SEE from the front. For safety. I'm running bar end signals with a custom harness, using an electronic flasher.

I kinda figured that. I just don't know where to mount the front blinkers. Going to have to fab something up. Trying to keep it clean. These blinkers better damn well work! If not......just use them on another project bike.

Thanks for the info.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Yeah, I hear ya. I tried running an electronic flasher in the Yamaha plug, and it just started smoking, as well. Different pin-out. So don't try that. Lol.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

I have a couple of these bikes.... you have me following along on this one ! :)

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Looking great. And I was shocked to see the rear fender in black...it looks really nice.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Thanks Trek. I'm trying to limit the chrome on this bike. Also, the chrome fender took away from the taillight. I was shocked at how easy the cb360 fender mounted up. No modifying at all.

Islandstar- I believe they are the Euro bars from Niche Cycle (30" wide). Can't remember for sure. I have ordered so many dang handlebars lately.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

WooHoo! I finally found a DENT free tank for the bike. This one is off of a XS500. Also got a new speedo and mirrors in from DCC. Thinking of going with a longer style mirror on this bike. Mounted one on for looks.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Well..........that tank off of the xs500 sucked! Had a ton of rust on the inside bottom that I didn't think was so bad. Ended up having a ton of pin holes. So, back to using the original tank. Going to have to pull the big dent out of the top of it.
I did get a bracket made up for the front blinkers. Turned out pretty good. Still need to clean it up a bit more and then paint it black.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

sorry bout the tank troubles, shes lookin good. I do like the tires. but is the front fender gonna fit? Or is there more work to come for that?

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

No front fender will be used. Just a fork brace. Haven't got to that point yet.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Looking good sir and if I may are you planning on adding a strip of something across the blinker mount to clean that area up ? JM2C
Had the same redish tank when I got mine and was full of rust so didn't even mess with it ! Over all your bike is looking killer keep doing what your doing !!!!

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Noice!

I just picked up the same tires for my SR50 project, they are killer!
They are reeeally soft though I dont see much life in them. Have you ridden them yet?

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Dreadrock- I had thought about welding a cover in front to hide the blinker hardware but iam still on the fence with that. I kinda like the raw simple look. It's kind of what I am going for. On this build I really don't mind a few wires being exposed. I may even pull the dent out of the tank and leave it as is. Origionally I was going to have the tank professionally painted. Don't know now.

SonicJK- I have never rode on these tires. I have read good things about them though. They do seem soft. Should last me a bit due to I ride my Tiger to work everyday. This bike will just be for the occasional ride to work and play on the weekends.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Posted this in another thread but had to add it to this one.

Craigslist score today. 74 TX500 parts. The list:

Tank with two minor dents, rust free inside (this was what I wanted. Everything else.....bonus).
2 petcocks
Gas tank cap
Front brake assembly
74 tx500 non titled frame (Got it home to find out it's junk. Major frame integrity issues)
Front wheel (Rim has damage so no go but, hub and spokes are good)
Forks are good
And as a bonus. I had forgot that I had a seized brake piston on my 74. So.....hoping this one is good.
Disc brake is good
Seat. Cover looks ok. Kinda dried out
Clubman bars....yea! Just what I needed, another set of clubmans.

All in all. Very happy spending $50 for all of this.
