Vintage Speed Part Mashup - 1976 CB750F

Little pre-Christmas fun for me. I went crazy and picked up every bolt needed for the engine except the ones underneath like lower case bolts and oil pan. I will do those soon though.

I also fit up the engraved Rickman points cover with some ARP fasteners as well. I had to make the pocket for each bolt bigger but it looks killer.

I also decided to turn a 12pt ARP bolt until a banjo for my oil pressure gauge since the chrome one I had looked out of place. The final assembly is a bit wide so I'm going to try and slim down the plug and bolt a bit to narrow it all.

So the m unit is all set up and ready to start making connections to switches/ power/ etc but that won't happen until I get the unit location finalized.

Also working on a unique way to mount the motogadget push buttons and came up with this

They still need lots of shaping and finishing but it gives you an idea. I had to go this route since there isn't enough clearance to use the clamp on styles that Motone and Motogadget have.

As for running the wires I can either make a small relief in the bar for the terminals on the back of each switch and run them external to the bar or I can drill the bars and run them out the ends in the middle. Thoughts?

I think I still have the list that includes valve cover, shifter, clutch, stator, tensioner and all bolts accessed from the top on the cases. I didn't get to the underside or oil pan yet. Ill take a pic and post it here.

That switch mount is pretty trick. nice work.

They are really coming along nicely and now I have both fitted to the bars the way they will sit once finished. All that is left on the parts themselves is hand work to soften some edges. I will probably get them hard anodized to match the finish of the masters themselves.

Based on Cal's drill baby drill comment (thanks Cal!) I will drill from the fork clamp to the housing, slot the bar for the back of the switch and run the wires that way for a cleaner look.

I also have another piece I am currently working on. I was going to wait until it was done but I'm just too excited with the way it looks to wait. I wanted to get rid of the tach drive since I won't be needing it. I had a cover with a gouged gasket surface that I cut the piece from to mate to a good cover. Once fitted it went to Jim French for some welding magic. There are some air pockets that will either need to be rewelded or filled with epoxy before finishing.

I see the stock connectors in there for the alternator/field coil. You sticking with the stock unit and wiring? Seems like with all this beautiful work and investment, you could upgrade one of the Achilles heals on these bikes.

Talk to me. I have never heard anyone complain about the charging system as long it's not stressed with additional voltage draws. Certainly open to any reliability upgrades.

Cycle X has a couple. Personally, I've had issues with a couple of stators and the connectors like to dry out from heat. Once they're gone, you're buying another used one because it's not an available part as far as I know. It could be just dumb luck for me, as I've known people never to have issues. But, looking at those CycleX kits, I think I'll do it on mine. They have a 3 phase external kit that has a super light rotor and puts out 16amps and an internal kit that's a little heavier, single phase, and puts out 14amps. Not to sound like a promo or anything, but I'm hoping to find someone who's done the swap to get their review.

I have seen those and was sold until I read the part about kick only. My rearsets are in the way of the kicker and I would rather keep the convenience of the starter.

Still making headway on the valve cover which I am pumped about. Got the holes drilled and counter bored and started making the inserts. All but one are done. It will be headed back to Jim for one more round of welding and it should be all wrapped up. Once back I will finish drilling out the holes for m6 screws. I pre-drilled with an 1/8"but just so I have center.

Also just about finished on the stator cover that will be engraved by JLeather just like the ignition cover I had done a while back. To prevent leaks I'm going to use long SS set screws or studs into the field coil sealing the threads. The cover will be held on by nuts.

Lastly just because they are effing cool and super rare I wanted to show these off. One day they will go on a superbike tribute I have in my mind along with some other goodies like Astralite wheels I got from 754.

The brake master is totally NOS and the clutch looks like it was used a VERY short period of time. Both still in original bags/ boxes.

Could you elaborate on what's going on with the valve cover? I'm not familiar, and I'd love to learn more. Also, have you ever considered etching over engraving? Different aesthetic, but super easy and clean on aluminum...

Early cb750 aftermarket valve springs were VERY stiff and had a tendency to pull the cam tower threads out of the head. The fix was a welded insert in the cover with a bolt that helped hold the cam tower down. It's totally unnecessary with modern springs but still looks the part on a vintage bike.

I have never considered etching but it's a really cool idea. Your example looks very well done. I will have to keep that in mind for the next time around. Is that something you do?

Thanks for the explanation. I'm learning a lot in this build. And yeah, I do the etching. Years of printmaking knowledge applied to bikes. Different depths can be achieved, polished etching, and glass enamel applied to deep cuts and so on.
