Hey there, since google directed me to this forum a lot of times I figured I might as well get an account here.
My name is Bart and I am a student from Holland. I've always been into cars, mopeds and bikes. Last year I got my license and because of some european rules I'm only allowed to ride a 125cc. With some luck I got this XL125s for cheap and now I'm planning on riding it and modding it.

Some pics of when I just got her.

So let me explain my plans for the thing. I really fell in love with the whole tracker, brat bike classic look. Builders like Deus and Wrenchmonkees really inspire me so that's the direction I hope my bike will head. This build will not be a fast one although I am picking up pace lately.

Since the original seat is missing and hard to get over here I had a friend make a bamboo seatpan. I didn't want it to be metal because that makes it a lot harder to upholster. I'm also test fitting a cb350f rear fender. Still not sure if I like it and I think the frame needs to be a bit shorter as well.

I didn't like the aircleaner box so I got me a new filter. That said I also needed a place to put the battery so with the help of a friend we made one. The biggest reason for me not speeding up on this build is the lack of tools like a welder, the material and a nice garage to work in. I did a quick once over with some paint on the box. Not the best looking but it's cold outside so painting isnt gonna be the best anyway. Will be resprayed once I have the bike in the shape I want it to be in.

Since the chrome on the handlebars was far gone I installed a new one. Also got me another light switch because the Honda one is way t bulky and had a blinker switch that I won't use. The bar end mirror isn't installing so the tape is holding it to see what it looks like. Might have to weld a nut in the bars to hold the thing.

Next thing will hopefully be 18inch front rim and I already have some new tires on the way.

That's pretty much it for now. I do have some questions and since there's quite some 125 honda builds here I hope someone can help me.

Questions

- I got the new airfilter. I'm currently running a size 90 main jet. How much must I jet up for it to run better?
- Planning on building a different exhaust. Anything I need to look out for regarding dimensions and stuff?

update 08-20-2014

After a very long period of not working on the bike. The engine failing because I accidentally stuffed the oil hole in the head with liquid gasket, I now have some new parts
installed on the engine so that should work fine now. It's waiting for the frame and it should be properly tuned and ready to go.

small picture of the proces

and today I finally finished welding the frame. I don't have a welder and no transport to take it to a welder. Now a friend of mine who has a shop 10 or 15 minutes by foot from here
had some time so I walked the frame there and we welded it.

So with all of that out of the way I should be able to finish most of it in a few weeks so I can get it on the road atleast. The plan for a 18inch front wheel will have to wait for later. I want to enjoy the last few weeks of summer. Haven't driven since februari

update 08-25-2014

I've been working on the bike a lot lately, I'm very close to firing it up.
The frame has been painted, some of the engine covers are painted aswell and just all sorts of random jobs
that needed to be done. I hope to drive it early next week.

b]An other update 2nd september '14 [/b]

Went to a friend of mine who repairs windsurfing gear and kites and also does some jobs at local beach clubs and stuff. He wanted to try to apolster my seat for the Honda.
I came to his place thinking I would drop it all off and hope to get it back in a few weeks or so. But he started right away and almost finished within 2 hours or so. Very nice for a first try
not perfect but it will definitely do for now and maybe for ever ;)

Re: Honda XL125s '78

you'll probably will need to get up to 95, but you can only get the best results by trying out different sizes, driving around a bit with it and reading your spark plug...

Re: Honda XL125s '78

Thanks mate. I will ofcourse buy different sizes but atleast I now have an indication on how high I'll need to go.
Did check my sparkplug and it's pretty much coffee brown. Which in two-stroke terms is pretty spot-on.
Don't really have any experience with 4-stroke. And it definately doesn't run spot-on at the moment

Re: Honda XL125s '78

did you also check timing and valve clearance? make sure that's right before you start jetting

I like the look of the bike, would love to find such a bike for a few bucks to play around with. looks a pretty nimble bike

Re: Honda XL125s '78

Jup valve clearance is checked and should be fine, advancer timing got set when I replaced the advancer itself. It ran just fine but changing the filter changed that a bit. XL125 should be around in belgium. A friend of mine who lives near the border picked one up a few weeks back. Just a later model. Over here in Holland we get almost no 125cc bikes

Re: Honda XL125s '78

finding one is not the problem, finding one i can afford is. and i've got to sell something first because insurance money is killing me

Re: Honda XL125s '78

Ah oke, mine was 350 euro's but that was because I talked the guy down from 650 ::)
So I guess I'm lucky. I pay for oldtimer insurance which is 3.60 a month. Not so bad

Re: Honda XL125s '78

i've also got the oldtimer insurance, but i've got my vespa's, hercules and the honda insured...

Re: Honda XL125s '78

Haha okay, yeah I got 2 puch maxi mopeds insured

Re: Honda XL125s '78 || 08-20-'14 Update 1st post frame welded

I have updated the first post, finally got some work done to this thing :D

Re: Honda XL125s '78 || 08-20-'14 Update 1st post frame welded

enjoy summer as long as possible indeed!

winter time is wrenching time, summer time is ride/abuse/break time!

Re: Honda XL125s '78 || 08-25-'14 Update 1st post, paint n stuff

Yeah man, updated the first post again. Hope to get this thing "done" before school starts

Re: Honda XL125s '78 || 08-25-'14 Update 1st post, paint n stuff

Got the thing running and had my first drive today. It's so smooth, idles perfectly. I was afraid that it would stall at the traffic light but it's perfect. Next job is to get a seat done because riding on a plank isn't comfy at all.

First drive in over half a year so I'm very happy

Re: Honda XL125s '78 || 08-25-'14 Update 1st post, paint n stuff

looking good! i like the red fork boots

Re: Honda XL125s '78 || 08-25-'14 Update 1st post, paint n stuff

Haha I don't, I'm thinking of taking them of or putting some black ones on there.
I did a quick photoshop of the bike. I kinda dig it. Tank might get some more work done to it
but for now this seems like a nice an cheap plan to make it a bit more special.
