Thinking out loud...

So Mikeadamstattoos has gotten me all wrapped up in the idea of a custom built small displacement road bike. Hes going ahead and building a boardtrack style ride with bicycle parts and so forth. I on the other hand am interested in more of a European 50s - 70s style small cc racer like these :

My issue is whether or not one of these bikes could be built and legally ridden on the road. The frame would be completely hand built (i.e. no VIN). Im thinking it would be more trouble than its worth for a bike with a top speed of 30+ mph. They would be a blast in the tight curves on the track though. Which brings me to my second question. Does anyone race these anymore?

Nah man! Put some pedals on it. Then its a bicycle and doesnt need anything!

Also I think the CC has something to do with it.

Von, I believe there is a way to get something like that registered under a "kit" vehicle. Probably tough as hell but I could ask the wife about it later today

Remember when Swagger was looking for a titled frame and somebody mention cutting the neck, downtube, and backbone? Might be a possibility there too

Ya, I looked into it a little, but in PA you still need registration and insurance on a moped. Cant get that with no VIN.

I know in MI if it's under 50cc you don't need anything. there are a lot of mopeds in the ypsi / ann arbor area and it does not matter if it has pedals or not. 49cc and your off...

man i love how they look and the idea... but my buddies would put it in a tree when i was not looking as a joke... no way could i have that sucker at the house

Ya Joe... Ive gotten shit for just talkin' about it. :D One friend already asked why Id want a bike smaller that the kids toy (the 350) I already have. I just think that they would SUPER fun to race on a tight track. Even if it was only at 30mph. Could you imagine 10 or more of them whizzing around together? It would be a blast.

They look funner than crap. I think you could get it registered. Just keep all the receipts for the build. local DMV/HWY Patrol will give you a vin

Ya Louie? Ill look into it. I have beers with a guy whos a state cop every once and awhile. Ill see what his take is. If I can find a decent motor on the CHEAP or preferably free, I dont think building a frame would be too bad. Id make it so that it stored the fuel (and oil in frame if needed) in the backbone, and the tank would be just a fibreglass or aluminum shell. It would be stupid simple in theory...

HOW AWESOME DO THESE THINGS SOUND!!!!!

It seems that Americans dont really dig on tiny bikes as I cant find anyone really who races these things here. All over in Europe and Japan though... Bummer. Seems like a perfect way to get into racing.

Sounds and looks like a go-kart race. In TX you can get a home brewed machine titled for a fee after it clears safety inspection.

Couldn't hear the first video over myself laughing ;D

Why couldn't you get a moped and chop that mother? Who cares so long as you have a vin?

About 24 seconds into that last video there is that straggler on the green bike - reminds me of the fat rhino in "Jumanji"

Mike, if you do build one of these, you gotta get a pic of your buddy sitting on it for the mock up like you did for the Supernaut!
