Re: Rachels Can-Am 600, Movin’ on up...

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

Everything including my nap came to a halt. Tim called me about mounting the tires.

Installed w new chain.

She fired up on third kick and idled pretty decent. Turns flash, but still got gas leaking from right carb. Either float needle or drain.
I will spend some more time on that in the morning. Been a big day.

Got her up to speed and was able to shift into second. Rear brake works GREAT!!! ;D

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

make sure you adjust the caounter balance shaft chain even though its low miles they get sloppy when new quick

does not hurt to do the timing chain if you have the rocker cover off they usually need a little pry out on the guide to help them move

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

Doug texted me last night and told me to check overflow for a crack. Dude was on it!!!
I installed my spare bowl and leak fixed. 8)

Next was new starter install. I might add that job kinda sucked. Have to pull the oil cooler. But now works like a champ!
Added ebay crash bars. Which as luck has it, match the rest of the bike...rusty. ::)

Replaced filter and installed it correctly.

Thanks, I will read about the counter balance adjustment.

I just buttoned her up and now ready to fire her up and do all that.

I will re-read manual. But I think I do tensioners w the machine running.

Then sync and adj A/F mix and idle speed. And she should be close to road ready. :)

The new Master cylinder on way from China. So, waiting for that. ::) Air filter and tail light bulb will be here tomorrow.

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

honda stopped doing teh running chain adjust years ago when the realized a lot of the tensioners get stuck

in school they just told us to do it static

counter balance is fast take the plug out

loosen the bolt

push down on the adjuster if it does not drop on its own

torque the adjuster bolt back up

put the plug back in

if you are out of adjustment then you need to take the cover off and move the adjuster up one groove on the spline shaft

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

opened up Right side and it hit the exhaust.

But just enough room to get her done. She did move just a smidge as I was loosening it. :)

Working it back into position I had to reach down and give one of the gears a nudge and she slid right on.

Did the cam chain (static)

She fired right up! I let her get good and warm then fiddled w the A/F on the carbs. Gonna check sync later as its lunch time.

Heres a little vid...P.S. Electric start is SO much better than kicking. 8)

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

Got the carbs dialed in, close enough.
Making too much voltage.

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

Stick with flooded cell lead acid on the battery. That voltage is a little higher than desired for other types.

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

I thought it may be a bit high. (comparing to 360) I was surprised at idle. But since it dont go up virtually anything at speed.

We will see how long this big AGM lasts.

On the way (plus some other goodies).

Got the sparckmoto.com R/R on FRIDAY! Thanks Matt.

I had to swap the red and black wires inside the connector. Other than that perfect fit. 8)

Tamed the high voltage issues.

The (other goodies). I guess it pays to be a loyal sparckmoto customer these past years. This is my 3rd machine using Matts stuff.

The LED turns and tail light = AWESOME! Atleast 50% brighter than bulbs.

New insulators are no longer "unobtainable" :). On EBAY

Stripping paint from body sucks. And half assed the polish job. My brother recommended speed bleeder so giving that a try.
New everything for the rest of it.

Re: 78 CB400A for Rachel

I found I had ordered the wrong Master cylinder (16mm) so had to get a 14mm. :p

fired her up for a test ride and she was running really rough. But, managed a test run to check brakes. Good.

I pulled the carbs then discovered I had left the vacuum gauge screw plugs out. Ha. Easy fix. ::)

She is now 100% road ready, safe and (fingers crossed) reliable.

Just gonna ride the shit out of her for the rest of the summer.

Making plans to take her down to frame this winter for clean, paint and polish.
