I picked up this cb750 a little while back and shelved my other half finished projects to work on it. The 'plan' being to ride it to Barber. I dunno if I'll get it done in time or if it'll make the trip but I'm still trying. Here's what it looked like when I picked it up.
As you can see, it was rather sketchy. It had a TC Bros hardtail that was installed incorrectly, rusty and jammed forks, sloppy front axle adapters for the 23" wheel, and a bent flimsy rear fender setup.
So.... I went about fixing it, or trying to.
After cutting the hardtail off, I did my measuring and welded it back on. (I have a jig but my xs650 is on it and I was in a hurry..)
Next up was the forks. They were really bad, so bad I didn't know if I could save them. I got some new seals and boots and tore into them. They were incredibly nasty inside, I'm talking dirt and rust... I cleaned them up the best I could and reassembled them but they still didn't work very well. I let them sit for about two weeks with automatic trans fluid in them for fork oil (it's high in detergent..) and then disassembled and cleaned them again. The springs had already been cut 2" to lower them so I turned some spacers and put them in along with fresh oil. I also shaved all the bumpys off and polished the lowers. Now they actually work pretty well and look decent...
I worked with the front axle spacers a bit and got the 23" front wheel setup to where I think it will run. All I lack now is a brake stay and to put the new tire on.
Well fast forward to today (or yesterday, I guess) and I've done a few things here and there, like start on the wiring harness and oil tank, but more on that later...
I picked up an old Harley fender from a friend and narrowed it.
And then mounted it..
I made the rear brake stay and lengthened the brake rod..
It had a sportster headlight and mount retrofit on when I got it. I didn't really like it but time is of the essence so I reused the mount and mounted an ancient yellow light I snagged off eBay a long time ago..
I had to clearance the back of the bucket to get it to fit like I wanted.
It actually doesn't. I've compressed the forks to check.. If I would have lowered the forks I don't think I would have went quite that low but the springs were already cut...
I plan to cut up what I've got there for 4 independent pipes under the frame. I don't think I could even get it off the table like it is. About 1" clearance..
Picked it up in Tuscaloosa but it probably showed up on Atlanta Craig's too. I heard it's been floating around Craig's in the shape I got it in for years now...
I finished the oil tank, made an electrics box, modified a set of 4-2 pipes, and wrapped up all the other odds and ends. Got it down and took it for a test ride. I think it's gonna work.
