I have to assume it's phase separation.  E10 fuel holds less water as it gets cooler.

Cleaned the petcock in some carb cleaner, drained the tank, and rinsed with fresh gas. My float bowls didn't have any varnish in them, so hopefully my petcock getting gunked up actually saved me some headache.
