Welding Helmet Suggestions ?

I use this place a lot.

Auto dark is definitely nice to have. But, if you plan to tig sheet metal, get a good one that has adequate low sensitivity otherwise you'll flash yourself when you light up and when you ramp down. No fun.

Hood should last a while so I don't mind paying a little extra.

That's what the sunscreen is for. I forgot to mention the sunscreen. Have you not watched that show with Chip Foose?

Also invest in some good welding gloves and a welding shirt/coat. The radiation burns are no joke. Skin feels a little tingly at first, then it itches and burns for days after. Not good. And picking slag out of your forearms sucks. ATGATT

I don't know how I've been welding for a living for 9 years without this thread

Ha, no scholarship here ! Just looking for what to look for I guess.

Thanks, all.

You will be able to buy lenses for this in ten years

Thats a Jackson.

Buy this... just to be sure, you should get one of those radiation suits also... you can never be too safe.

Burnt my first welding rod to the table 38 years ago.

I love welding in chicken yellow rad suits! :D
Preferrably somewhere deep inside a reactor containment!

Can you smuggle one out?? I need one for painting primer :-\

Nuke reactors sure do come in handy for a lot of stuff! Guess you're talking about the rad suit though?
Theyre not easily smuggled out, how about coveralls and a hood? Helluva lot cheaper i think.. :D

Overkill?... huh ???

I don't do a lot of welding anymore but a couple of years ago I bought an auto darkening helmet from HF. I was curious as a neighbor down the street does a lot of tig welding and he uses one. I use a stick and mig. I was more than happy with it. It may have limitations that I'm not aware of. How it would perform if you job is welding all day I don' know. But it works fine for my needs.

Follow up question. The night course I' m taking has no real curriculum, just basics in mig, flux core, and stick. However, the instructor is willing to help me weld potential motorcycle frame, provided I brimg in some 1" tube.
I know nothing about metal tube sizeing, so what should I buy to practice on ?

Thanks !

Man... just cut up an old frame and do some mock fab work on it. Junk yards are full of them. I taught my kid to weld when he was real young by drilling 1/2" holes in 16ga sheet metal and having him fill them one tack at a time, it's good practice. Most guys don't look at the weld pool at first, learn to look at the weld, watch the wire go into the metal, with tube i tend to make small 1/8 - 1/4" circles with the wire, the welds you see that look like coins are usually not continuous welds there surge welds a series of weld stop weld stop weld like this gusset I welded in a frame: Just relax and burn up as much wire, rod and gas as you can at this class man and you will get it.

+1 You can't learn the skill out of a book anyways =) There is no time like hood time.

I always enjoy watching videos from www.weldingtipsandtricks.com
Better than most curriculum I have come across anyways.

Went out and welded up a triangulation section with tire relief for the CB tonight to weld in at the back of the tail section, this is with a low budget Lincoln 140 MIG and C25 flowing at just over 15 cfm pics show setup... the welds are back and forth to keep shape and not over heat the thin tube and sheet metal, I ground the welds off to show that the fillet did not root to full penetration (see cracking), knowing this I grind one side reweld with shorter surges and the welds will clean up and have full penetration, if I would have prepped better (ground/cleaned) I may have avoided this or changed the process to TIG and only dab filler after the weld pool has formed. I can weld the end caps with TIG if your interested.

The helmet is the cheapo from Northern Tool... It seems to be working very nicely.
