Day 1 is complete.

Left home at 7:30AM - gassed up and met Dave at Trafalgar/QEW at 8AM
Down through Buffalo, to Erie PA and then down I79 to Morgantown WV. Arrived at 4PM
Total distance travelled today was 389 miles. Not bad for 8 hours riding with breakfast at Denny's in Erie and a few gas stops.
Top speed of 95MPH with lots of time in the 80's. Not quite the ton, but close enough.

View the trip at www.dotheton.com/trip

Only 1 photo so far - us gassing up. Will have the camera mounted tomorrow hopefully for the run into Knoxville.

Sounds like fun already!! ;D

Go get 'em!

good time ! i was down on the 17th to 21st lots of leo's on the dragon on the 19th. took my sv1000 down for a workout.

Day 2 is done (at least the riding)

Made it from Morgantown, WV to downtown Knoxville, TN today.
440 miles in 8 hours
Amazing scenery riding down I79 and 19
It pissed rain on us all day though. Most of the time it was a fine mist, but at times it was like riding through needles. Sharp little drops at 80 MPH.

Topped out today at 97MPH, going downhill. Loaded up with saddlebags, duffle bag and tank bag, the bike just can't get to 100MPH. Probably just as well - wouldn't want to start shedding baggage at that speed.

Gotta run downstairs and sort out Dave's charging system. Battery is getting some charge, but isn't cranking the starter. Having to bump start the damn thing.

Sunday and Monday night will be spent down in Dillsboro in the heart of the action. Then start making our way back north home.

Day 3 is underway. Rode from Knoxville to Franklin NC today - only 115 miles.

Rode through Smokey Mountain Park. Getting in and out of the park is rediculous. Like riding through a theme park, and lots of traffic being a Sunday and all.

Got the camera mounted on the bike and set it up to take pics every couple of minutes. I threw them all up unedited, so there's lots and lots of pics.

www.dotheton.com/trip - zoom in to get separation of the image points.

Day 4 riding is done. Came up from Franklin, did the Hell Bender on the way to Tapoco NC.

We're staying at Tapoco Lodge, established in the 1930's. Great little place. Our cabin has a screened in porch with good ol' rocking chairs overlooking the river. 3 miles from the start of the Dragon.

The morning ride from Franklin was like riding through a cloud (it pretty much was a cloud). 8AM was a little early. Should have waited a couple of hours for the fog to burn off. Was hard to see, and it didn't help with all the moisture on my glasses.

Dropped the bags off at Tapoco, and went out to ride the Dragon. Awesome roads (they all are around here). Rubbed the toes of my boots on the road - need to be careful as the BMW footpegs don't hinge up. Could lift the rear wheel if I'm not careful.

Camera mount worked well - took pics on its own all day. Pared out all the crap and was left with a few decent shots of the road.

After the Dragon, we headed to Vonore for gas and lunch (gas shortage in the area). Cheap lunch at a great new Italian place. Then headed to Telico Plains in search of new boots, but the local shop was closed. Then towards Robbinville on the Cherohala Skyway - another amazing road. Stopped to take some pics.

Went up from Robbinsville back up to Tapoco via the 129 along the Cheoah River.

All in all 190 miles of great twisties from 8AM to 4PM.

Tuesday we'll explore some more, run the same routes again, and maybe find me some new boots (my old Joe Rockets are just about done and are not waterproof anymore). Then Wednesday, we start making our way back towards Toronto.

Any suggestions on routes back to Toronto would be welcomed. We came down by Interstate through Pittsburgh, then to Knoxville. Beautiful highway, and would happily go the same way home, but are looking for options.

Day 4's route and pics are now at www.dotheton.com/trip

Day 5 is in the bag. 170 miles today, but did it from 9AM to 7PM - lots of time running around buying boots.

I decided my venerable Joe Rocket boots had served their time. They proved to be unworthy of 8 hours in the rain coming down, so I was keen on picking up a new pair down here for a decent price.

Looked up in Marysville TN, but nothing to be had. Racing boots sure, but no touring boots.

Ended up down in Tellico Plains at Tellico Outfitters. Great shop, which we visited on Monday but it was closed. It's right at the beginning of the Cherahola Skyway, so a good excuse to do the road again.

Between the two of us we bought three pairs of boots! We both bought very nice TXC Air Techs, which are mostly mesh with some rubber and leather bits. Full Gore-Tex lining (the real stuff, not some pretend waterproofing). Got great reviews online. Not cheap, but man oh man are they nice in the warm temps. Like wearing a mesh jacket vs. leather in the heat.

I also picked up a pair of Teknic full leather touring boots - also waterproof. These will be my cold weather boots. They're very warm, just like my old Rockets. Got a great deal on them, making up for the pricey Air Techs.

Had dinner at Ruby's in Robbinsville. Meatloaf, green beans, mashed potatoes, corn bread and apple cobbler.

Trip route and pics up at www.dotheton.com/trip - the GPS logger battery died during dinner, so our run up 129 back to Tapoco isn't on the map. Experimented with different camera placement, but mostly took pics of my arse.

Took a video of some curves on the Skyway - will post the link soon. Keep in mind those are MPH on my speedo ;)

They weren't today - rode from Deals Gap to Beckley WV - about 350 miles. We called it quits at 4PM. It was pretty cold and the rain started coming in strong. We have 2 days to finish the last 550 miles, so no big deal.

It was cold as hell riding through the mountain passes today, and it's gonna be cold again tomorrow, so we'll be wearing all our gear.

Yep - sure am glad I bought both pairs, but if I hadn't, I'd have kept my old Joe Rockets. As it is, they're up on the shelf in Telico Outfitters on proud display with a crusty old set of motocross boots. He's putting up old gear on display. So my boots will live in perpetuity in Telico Plains. I'll go visit them next year ;)

Was really cold today - thankfully we escaped any rain, but it was still cold. Covered 360 miles today, from Beckley WV to Erie PA. Only 190 miles left to home, but we called it quits at 4PM as it was getting colder (along the lake) and it started to pour in the area.

Somehow I lost my Phototrackr GPS logger this morning :( Glad I only paid $40 for it. But, the route we're taking back is the same as the route down, so I still have the complete trip.

Total milage once we get home will be:

26-Sep-08 390 - Toronto to Morgantown WV
27-Sep-08 433 - Morgantown WV to Knoxville TN
28-Sep-08 114 - Knoxville TN to Franklin NC
29-Sep-08 189 - Franklin NC to Tapoco NC (and riding around the area)
30-Sep-08 168 - Tapoco (riding around the area)
01-Oct-08 342 - Tapoco NC to Beckley WV
02-Oct-08 360 - Beckley WV to Erie PA
03-Oct-08 191 - Erie PA to Toronto

For a total of 2,184 miles, or 3,516 KM. Not bad for 8 days riding. Longest day was the 2nd, at just under 700 KM. That was also ironically the only day we got caught in the rain, but it was nice and warm, so no real problem. We would have pressed on today, but Dave's bike started acting odd.

In hindsight, the stops in Knoxville and Franklin would be left out. We could have gotten down to Tapoco on the 27th with better advance planning. As it was, we didn't know where we were going to be the next day till we got there. The stop in Franklin proved useful as that day we got Dave's battery charger, new battery (his tested bad) etc. His new rotor is on the way to Toronto from Motorrad Electrik or whatever. It tested bad also.

His rotor failed on day 2. He had to buy a battery and charger (yeah, we left the Optimates at home) and a long extension cord to charge every night. For the first day, I had to bump start him every time we stopped. Got some strange looks from other riders at the Cherohala viewing points. Two wacko's on old BMW's pushing their bikes.

The bikes got a lot of attention everywhere we went. Didn't see anything else anywhere near as old on the road. My bike has run like a champ from the start, although it's burping and sputtering at idle after a few hours riding. Needs some more tuning I think.

Oh, Dave also thinks his carb diaphragm is leaking - bike is running but mileage is horrible and he thinks he's leaking gas out the top of the carb. Not sure yet - will get home and look into it. At one point today he stopped completely on I79 and I had to loop back for him. Thankfully whatever gremlin was there quickly left and we got up and running again.

Morgantown WV is a great town on the weekends, but make your hotel arrangements in advance if there's a WVU football game. People drive 8 hours for these things. We got our room at 4PM and there were none left in the area by 6.

Tapoco Lodge is highly recommended for staying in the area. No highspeed internet or telephone in the cabins, but satellite tv on nice big LCD's in the cabins allowed us to check weather etc. In the dining/lounge buildings there is free wireless internet and a telephone for free calls in the US, but nowhere else. No cell coverage either, so Skype or similar is the only way to call out to Canada. Great food too! $105 a night for a 2 bed cabin with shared screened in porch and private bathroom. Not cheap, but nice, homey and right in the heart of things.

Oh, just keep your eyes open for Copperhead snakes - I almost stepped on one. Missed it by 6 inches. They're apparantly the mildest of the local venomous snakes, but still will fuck you up bad if you get bit and are in the middle of nowhere. 2 hours for an ambulance.

The weather down in the area was picture perfect - leaves just starting to fall, so no dangerous patches of wet slippery leaves on the roads, and during the week traffic was light on the roads.

There's a big Airhead rally down here in mid-late October, organized I think by ADVRider.com - might check it out next year.

If we come down again, especially this time of year or later, I think we'd consider trailering the bikes down. We each only get mid-30's MPG, so it would be cheaper gas-wise to trailer the two bikes down, and we'd get down faster and spend more time riding in the area. I could also bring my XS650 (if I get it done) which would be fun. Plus we'd have an out if the bike(s) broke down.

Highly recommended trip for anyone who has the time and bike to ride down. It's basically like going to a ski resort and picking which run you're going to do.

I think my favourite road was the Cherohala Skyway. It's really long as far as local rides go, and is a blast to ride. Getting stuck behind cars is a pain, but there are lots of spots to get around them and they often pull over. Spectacular views.

Anyhow - trip is all but over and was a great first time extended tour.

Here's my Cherohala Skyway video - turn your volume OFF - just the sound of wind. I'll have to put music on it.

The end of the video is a great touch... nicely done!

LOL.. I was expecting Tim to go over the curb, pass the table and go down the hill yellin..'AW SHIT!!.. my fingers are frozen and I cant stop the bike!!!!.. AHHHHHGG!!......CALLLLL 911 SOOMMEEEOOnnneeeeeee"...

Well, a bitter sweet end to the trip today. Both bikes were acting like snotty teenagers all day yesterday and today. Took forever to get running, one cylinder kept going out below 3000 rpm, backfiring etc. - and it was both bikes doing the same crap. Clearly we jiggled something out of tune during our riding.

Anyhow, we were making it home from Erie, and then just as we were going through the border crossing, I notice and Dave feels his back wheel is screwy. We get through customs, pull right over and have a look. It looked like his axle somehow loosened up and moved to the left about 1/8 inch, allowing play in his rear wheel on the axle. We couldn't get the axle back into position without a hammer, so we went around the corner and found a Canadian Tire.

Had a closer look, and one of the mechanics came out who rides. Sure enough, with the excess play in the wheel, the bearing gave way and was basically nonexistant. The wheel was all wobbly.

So, clearly that was it for his bike. No way we were going to a) find the right sized bearings and b) get them in the wheel today in Fort Erie ON. A few calls around and UHaul came to the rescue with a 26 foot truck (only one they had). We loaded up the bikes and drove the truck home.

Crappy way to end the trip, but the bikes are back home safe and sound (almost) as are we.

A note on the video - as I pulled into the lookout area, and up to the edge of the mountain, the battery died. The end of the video was the battery cutting out. I was going to pan around a bit, but no such luck.

You can't see clearly in the video, but the needle rarely dips below 60MPH, and on that straight stretch hit almost 100. Not bad for the old bike. I'll be replacing my wheel bearings in the next week or so too. Tires in the spring most likely.

We've resolved to trailer the bikes down in coming years. Just too much risk and long cold rides getting them down there and back. Also, with a trailer I can bring the 650 and the R75 down ;)

Which would have him posting it a bit suspicious no? ;D

Got some pics from one of the local road-side photogs at Deals Gap - awesome quality. Click for my Picasa link and full-size.

Quite an impressive trip, man. The roads around here are part of why I moved to Chattanooga last year. I'm about 2-3 hours from the Dragon.

Thats exactly what the roads here are like...but DON"T TELL anybody ;)
