I just bought my first bike two weeks ago! I found an 81 xs400 special on craigslist. She is running now and I thought I'd sign up because I have found so many helpful threads during my searches on DTT.
She is real, I swear! Here is a glance at some dis assembly...first look at the crustiest carbs ever, and some nonexistent brakes that had the front all sorts of locked up.
That was the plan when I got it. Wanted to have her sounding great by Thanksgiving....but last night was the first time I got to crank her and she started right up! Not only did she start up, but she sounds amazing! Much better than I thought I would get with those carbs...even though I dipped them FOUR times. Had to solder some holes in the floats too...that was some iffy/scary business. Now I am on a mission to figure out how to change out my clutch as ALL of this is very new to me. Couldn't be having a better time though!
damn i have never seen brakes that bad they must of been locked up and rubbing for some time. Those are some seriously goopy carbs. Cool bike man i like that model alot.
I don't have a manual as of yet. Last night I took the clutch plates off. They were pretty stuck but don't seem to be in bad shape. I scuffed them up a bit with some 320 grit and have them soaking in oil. I'm going to put it all back together in the morning and see if that clutch lever loosens up a bit...if not then I'm going to shoot for a hydraulic clutch because as of now, that thing is a beast to pull in.
