Arrrrrgggghhhhh - now I'm looking at Black / Orange again!!!

Seriously - thanx for the pix - LOVE that Orange.

I'm off to the powder coaters this weekend to have a look at their Acid green swatches. I know they have a couple of suitable Orange powders from my last visit.

Normally I'd spray it myself but I'm thinking powder coating would be more durable on wheels. The Matt Black I'll do myself.

can not go wrong with black and orange! have you thought of flip flopping it? do flat orange on the tins and what not and the flat blck on the wheels... would be easy as shooting the flat black, just shoot orange and flat clear over it

Joe - too many ideas mate !!!!!!!!!!!!

I THOUGHT I'd decided on Matt Black main colour with Acid Green Wheels / accents.

A trip to my local Powder Coaters resulted in a lost mission - they have only a basic selection and when you mention metallics there's a sharp intake of breath and sucking of teeth !
However, on a trip to a local Bike shop they gave me details of a powder coaters in Birmingham [ UK ! ], which is not too far away from me.

I contacted them today, and they have a much larger range in stock and special colours can normally be ordered in [ for a nominal cost ] - but at least it looks like I can get the colourways that are in my mind.

I really DO like the Orange / Black combo, but here in the UK - that's the main alternative colour - let's all be different together.

Sooooooo - it looks like matt Black and the new Kawasaki Metallic Green - heading towards Lime.

Thanx to everyone for the input - I think [?] I am now decided. 8)

Finally the front spindle [axle ] saga is over.

I took the new spindle together with the BMW OEM alloy spacer in to the machine shop to have the parts trimmed to their final dimension. The Brembo 4 pot calipers fit a treat, all in all I'm well pleased - even if it has taken 6 months of aggro to get it all done.

Then it's just a swap over of the forks and the bike will be rolling again. Finish the odd bits of wiring and then it's down to fettling the GRP panels for final fit making and welding up various mounting tags and brackets.

After all that - i'll be tearing the lot down for painting and detailing. Only 7 years .........................

Oh yes, and then there's the low mileage K1100 16 valve engine sat on the bench with a turbo sat on the shelf .............. it would be rude not to don't you think?

Matt Black and Orange it is then Joe ! Thanx for helping me to make up my mind.

At some stage I really am going to have to do something else in Green / Black.

I've just ordered 5 litres of FO Orange - so that's it!

Re: the Green / Matt Black - I think I've just talked myself into building a "Special" based on my spare TR1 bike. When the TR1 Cafe Racer [ 60's ] is completed [ and of course the Fighter! ] I'll begin work on a modern take [ like Doc Shops and others ] who have put a really free thinking spin into the TR's.

Only doing it so I can paint something Acid Green / Black ! Your fault Joe. ;)

New Year, health issues resolved and full of enthusiasm. Time to get busy again. ;D

Just checked and I'm still OK to move into the co-operative Hobby Shop 1st Feb. By then my back injury should be fully repaired and I'll be able to transport all the projects down there.

Need to get the Powder Coaters back onside - FO Orange it is for this one, thanx for all the advice / suggestions. I've got all the new bearings, seals and RAM Goldline progressive fork springs - so forks will be rebuilt with new headstock bearings before the change over. I fired it up after the Winter layoff, athough I say it myself the new upswept exhaust system sounds awesome ! Sounds like a real bike now, not a car. ::)

E-Bay sales have been kind to me so I've got the money put by for the Powder Coating, bearings etc., with enough left over to get the rims and Amal Mk 2 Concentric carbs for the TR1 Cafe Racer project. I feel a good year coming on. 8)

I'm glad to hear that things are moving forward for you TJ, that's great news..

Thanx for the sentiments Lee - yes, several projects MUST be completed this year.

Just to give myself a lift I charged the battery up and fired the bike up at the weekend. Fired on the second prod of the starter.

All the parts ahve been sorted out into the relevant boxes ready for the move - really can't wait now.

Started to move in - a step closer.

The front wheel / fork conversion should also be finalised in the next 2 weeks, meaning there's just some final detailing to do before it's stripped down for final paint etc.

In the meantime, I scored a set of R1150GS wire spoked alloy rimmmed wheels. Originally for my Kay Cafe Racer - now culled, I'm debating whether to use these on the Fighter - powder coated Gold ???

I should rename this thread - "work in VERY SLOW progress"............. ::)

JIC I decide to go with the wire wheels - I managed to get a set of good discs and bobbins [ front / back ] very cheap and also the mini 4 pot Brembo for the rear - £15 the lot [ $36 ? ].

The front wheel fork conversion will be completed next week an then I can set about the final mock up detailing before the paint stripdown.

BMW R1150GS - awesome wheels.

If you're stuck with ideas on what to do with the wheels, shoot them across the pond - I'm sure I can do something with them :)

Spot on Tim .....R1150GS

At first I couldn't get my head round the weird spoke lacing design - just looked wrong.
However, when you see a really wide [ say 5" +] rim, the traditional centre lacing option looks a trifle weak !

Originally I bought a set [ R1150GS ] for my abandoned K100 Cafe Racer - sold them and then these came up silly cheap, would have been rude not to ??

I'm busy juggling parts I have "in stock" for my next few projects - The TR1 Cafe Racer is pretty well sorted - just the decision on whether to go for the spare Grimeca 4LS that AC has in his workshop ! I need another set of wheels for my "Special" based on a spare TR1 - now that depends on the style as I can only fund one of the two I have in mind. There's the "Willow" / Monster Craftsman Voodo Boardtracker 'ish style or an out and out Special [ both TR1 based ] Further indecision has been raised by the fact that a guy has offered me obscene money for the BMW 5 spoke alloys !

I had some XS500 wire spoked alloy rimmed wheels blasted and powder coated [ Gold ] - while still assembled [ bearings out ]. The powder coaters said they had done many sets like that all with good results - and they were ! Obviously that saved the cost of a strip and rebuild of the wheels.

These wheels vary dramatically in S/H value - some [ like mine ] with slight cosmetic damage go quite cheap. FYI - the new price is around $1200 per wheel !!

I'll have a better idea when I get the Kay down to the new workshop and a bit of room to stand back and look at the options. The R1150 rims are smaller width -1" front and 1.5" rear. Also the front is 19" dia. as opposed to 17" for the K1200S.

Thankfully th TR1 cafe Racer is sorted wheelwise - it's just the £400 for the Grimeca front hub/brake - ouch. Or stick with the twin discs!!

The Grimeca brake is VERY good - certainly as good as early Japanese discs. That said, I am erring on the side of self preservation and the twin discs !

We'll have a direct comparison as AC IS using the Grimeca, so if I use the twin discs [ probable ] we can see which set up is better.

The Kay is getting 2 x 305mm discs and 4 pot Brembos - wires OR alloy wheels.

TJ, whats your method for interfacing with a chain drive and that tasty GS wheel?
(I love the lacing and ability to run tubeless with spokes!)
