I wanted to get a sticky started to help those wanting to use a different tank from what came stock on their bikes. Direct bolt ons to major modding needed, post up here what has been a "confirmed" swap. Pics would be great also.

*Mods please delete if there already is a thread like this one. I searched but couldn't find anything*

Cb400 tank on a xs650 :wouldve be less work to build a tank
rd400 tank on a rd350 : make rear mount and move the petcock

A cb350f tank will fit on a cb350 twin frame with a little modification; requires front mount relocation and deepening of the tunnel, but other than that they're very close to each other in dimensions so it fits well.

See this thread for more details / pics.

I can also confirm that 350 tanks will NOT fit a 550 frame. Have not tried the reverse yet, but I suspect the fit will be very sloppy.

A honda dream tank will fit on a CB360 with some lower profile bolt heads and nuts for the engine mount, or a soft tap. Also requires a different rear mount and front rubbers.

GS1100E onto a GT750. Fits straight onto teh front mounts and needs a pair of brackets fabbed at the back.

YZF600R tank onto GT750 Suzuki - that one involves replacing most of the frame tubes though :-(

This is a good thread. If not for what fits, then to check out the lines of different tanks to see which tank strikes one's fancy.

GT380 tank onto an SR (250) frame involves banging a dent in the underside of the tank and make new front rubber clips. The rear mount is almost dead on but requires a custom one to be right.

Don't mod the tank width, make a new seat instead.

Fitting a cb160 tank on a cb360...
have to grind down front frame tabs
pound out the front of the tunnel a bit
fabricate a way to mount in the back
and replace petcock because OEM cb160 petcock hangs too low and hits valve cover.

In other words, totally worth it because it looks awesome.

Here's a 1979 Honda CX500C tank on a 1985 CMX250C Rebel. Requires nothing more than a couple bushings to tighten the fit at the neck and a 1/4" pad at the rear bolt to make it fit tight

Dt400 tank drops into the front mounts on an xs650. Rear mount might need work.

Heres a Ducati tail section on an Rd, it looks great! I found this bike's owner , and a picture of how it mounts, he says:
I'm not 100% sure since it was on there when I bought the bike, but I'm fairly certain it's the DUCSSS2 seat from AirTech - http://www.airtech-streamlining.com/vintage/images/seats/DUCSSS2contact.jpg.

The frame was modified to weld on a 'perch', onto which the seat is mounted using a single bolt from the top. Not the most elegant solution, but it works! You can see the top of the bolt in the photo you posted. That is what the 'perch' looks like .
