Motorcycle Powered Kart: Father Daughter Project

Dale

Coast to Coast
My daughter (who I'll call "A"), 8 years old, shares my workshop space with me.

Shes a Maker.

She also believes that her dad can build anything. (I'm not going to burst her bubble :p)

She's been asking me to build her a "car". A "real" car. One with cupholders and a radio, and a trunk that can hold a picnic basket.

A couple of weekends ago, she started designing her car.
She then built a prototype cup holder, and a Dice to hang off the rear view mirror. :)

What could I say. I could only say "SURE! We'll build you a car!"

After a bit of thought, I figured an ATV would make a good donor: front end steering, rear drive axle, motor etc.

Picked up this no name brand (Im guessing Chinese) for thirty bucks. It may even run s is. We'll see soon.

The plan:

Split the front end in half, and widen the track.

Widen the rear axle.

Move the motor above the axle.

A real car needs serous rubber.

Whatever I'm building, the wheels always (for me) form the foundation.

Getting to work over the weekend:

Starting to create templates for a "style" for the vehicle. I really want her to be as involved with as many aspects as possible. We worked together on this.

And this is where we landed. A general direction to go into once the chassis is built.

And heres a color mockup of maybe where we might want it to look like. Honda logo wont be there. (Initially I was going to use a Honda motor)

Thats awesome! Dad and Daughter connecting while building something she came up with

Im in for this build thread

Ha Ha thanks guys!

@sincerelyadam: well spotted! It's all in the details! :)

Can't wait to slice up that little ATV.

Very cool. If ya need any bits and pieces let me know. I have all kinds of stuff lying around that I'll never use.

Ha ha thanks for all the support and good vibes guys.
Thanks for the kind offer Von.

Some progress to share: The teardown begins. I'd say 90% of the nuts and bolts were loose, so made for some easy work taking stuff apart :-D

Gas Tank Referb

Nice little steel tank. The paint was faded, and "A" got into it with some rubbing compound and got it looking pretty sweet.
She loves using that high pressure washer. Silicon spray onto the plastic cap.
