'40 Sport Scout bob job

Coast to Coast
I think its time to start a long term build project on the 1940 Indian Sport Scout my Dad sold me this month. This project will take a few years. I'm Ok with that. My Dad is going to be building it with me. Originally, they are a 45cu in flathead engine. We will be stroking it using 74" flywheels. Going to get some more info, but a Honda XL piston has been used in these because of the higher pin height. Don't know the details yet. May have to have some built otherwise.
So a stock '40 has skirted fenders and big tanks. The idea is to have a rear fender only and might use the remaining piece of the '36 Ford sparetire cover I used on my Triumph. Dad says they used them back in the day. I need to aquire a LOT of pieces even though this thing is really complete. I 'll post some pics and will continue to do so. Here is where it is now.

The forks are VARD and are very hard to come by. The speedo is a corbin and is really nicer than the picture shows. Carb is Linkert, and one of the more desirable ones to have. The wheels are currently 16" but are supposed to be 18", which I will put back to. They will be painted with cad spokes and black hubs. i may use '36 Indian Junior Scout tanks because they are smaller and will look more cut down(Dad also has them). Don't know any of the rim or tank colors yet. Will post more when I learn more.

Oh, the handle bars are Stelling & Hellings high bars, an aftermarket accesory way back. Also, this is a numbers matching bike, I want to take my time and do it right. It will be built so it could be put to original fairly easily.

Hell yeah Kev... Im excited to see this happen. If for no other reason than it being guranteed vintage moto porn for a couple years!

Let me know if you need anything man. I know a few vintage Indian/HD guys out here. They have stuff from the teens through the 50s and know everyone/everything when Indians are involved.

I went down to the Case IH tractor dealership and bought some hardware (cheapest place to buy bolts, still by the pound) and kind of mocked up the project to see what it looks like. The tanks pictured are the stock ones, I have to bring home the junior scout ones yet, so I can't compare. The picture of the horn is the one I'll use. It is a correct horn, made by the same mfr. Just have to replace the cone with an Indian grille and its OEM correct.

Just trying to learn more before i tear into to it. Put the trans in and figuring out the shift linkage. When actual work starts on it, it will be the cases and cylinders.

I hung the primary on last night and started with floorboard parts. I'm missing a lot of spacers for the board mounts, but are available and out there. I figured out the shift linkage as well. Just hanging on parts to see what I don't have.

I found the generator over at Dad's the other day. Getting geared up to go to an epic swapmeet next week in Davenport, IA. So Stoked!

I tallked to my good buddy Dean last night. He is setting me up with a pair of chief 74" flywheels AND and '39 sport scout primary cover (has "Indian" script cast into it) and is bringing it to Davenport for me. So stoked. He is going to build HIS '40 sport scout bobber stroker at the same time as mine. This is gonna be fun!!

I made this axle cap on the lathe a couple nights ago. I cut the O.D. down in the 3 jaw chuck, cut a 3" chunk off, and mounted it in the 4 jaw chuck to bore the 1" dia hole through it, then put it in the 3 jaw and used a parting tool to cut it in half. Have to drill the stud holes yet.
Had a great time at the swap meet and picked up lots of parts and learned about different Indian models in general from my friends, who are Indian pro's
