Just purchased a set of vm30 carbs from DCC.
Now I'm wondering if its not enough carb for my 1982 gl 500.
Anyone out there know or have them setup on a similar bike.
I want to make sure before install them and can't return them.

to small you will have lousy top end it will choke

they are even a tad small on the low end

I had an early CX500 and I believe it had 34mm CV carbs. The CV type of carb is hindered in ultimate flow by the butterfly and shaft through the throat of the carb. I would be surprised if the 30mm VM did not out flow the 34mm CV. I feel the 30 should work fine. A larger carb may or may not be faster. Best is to find someone who has already done this swap.

Question for CXman:

What size carbs does a CX like to run for overall performance - not race type top end - just average riding? I would have thought that 30mm would have been enough up to about 75% throttle and after that might be a size or two too small.

the kit i sell uses custom made tuned intakes and vm34s

and a cx is a high rpm low geared bike so it cruises at 10 mph per thousand roughly in 5th gear

so at 70 you are over 7k

in normal shifting you will run to 9 k or better if you want the front wheel to float up

hard for a 30 to supply a hemi head cross flow high compression 500
