1986 xr-z50r big wheel hellride

irk miller

You've been mostly-dead all day.
DTT BOTM WINNER
I just pulled in a 9 bike z50r haul. I'm looking to restore as many as three of them, with the 86 seemingly the most solid. Plus it's a classic gold wheel Honda dirt bike. This will be my first actual restoration:

Cool, wouldn't mind having one of those, myself.................

Started a tear down. The jug is actually good to go with a cleanup and hone. The head, on the other hand, I'm not so sure. One valve doesn't spring back. The cam looks good. Everything else with the motor is solid.

Re: 1986 z50r restoration hellride

I am in for sure. I love the old Z50s.
So many parts for these motors as well.

I have 2 Z50A and my brother has a Z50R. Best fun I have had on a bike was on these little things.

Re: 1986 z50r restoration hellride

I am envious of that haul. Those gold wheels are too legit.

Re: 1986 z50r restoration hellride

This little guy has not been forgotten. I’m slowly collecting parts. The gold paint on these rims doesn’t appear to be available in the US. I’ve been testing different off-the-shelf paints to find the right match, hoping I can find it that way without having to dig through catalogs of paint chips. Low and behold, I think I’ve found a decent match (old rim with tire, newly painted rim without):

Needles to say, HM rims in good shape are not as easy to find as I thought. For all the bikes I hauled in, that’s one part I have a short supply of.

you can get a complete top end jug piston rings cam head rockers gaskets everything for less than 100 bucks

its tough to spend a lot of time working on the old stuff steve brought some to barbers and sold them all either there or since

Starting rust removal and rebuilding forks. Everything rusty is getting a bath in phosphoric acid.

I worked the forks with Scotch Brite and phosphoric acid, then I followed up with a Simichrome polish...
