Nortons....

Weather is starting to break a little bit.

Had a hard time finding ice to SCUBA under a few weeks ago!

I like 75+ deg reefs... screw that ice dive stuff. Does adrenaline even flow when your an ice cube? or do you drink a gallon of Gatorade and pee in the wet suit the whole time :p

Have I ever mentioned that I HATE doing electrical work? Well I do. I also do not understand why Norton insists on having to bullet connections connected with some POS tube! Makes things rather interesting.
I need to sit down and find a really well drawn schematic and just do this. I have the back half installed so at least there is some progress.

Spent the day in the garage doing a few little things. I was very excited to see the bike come together, but now it seems that I am putting in a lot of hours, but nothing really looks different....
Guess that last 10% really does take 90% of the time.

Got to use my fancy new tool to install the points plate oil seal properly.
Freaking brits.....

Connected up all the oil lines. Found this neat picture that made things a breeze.

Did some really important stuff like take the front end off again to polish. When the weather is getting nicer by the minute and your bike isnt running it really is important to polish crap....

Mocked up the primary. I know I need the locking tabs on the three bolts.
With the gasket installed it is shimmed perfectly.

Need to see where the side stand spring gets connected to have one more simple thing crossed off the list.

The clutch basket needs to be shimmed out a bit so that the chain is aligned. Found a link to some pictures of how everything should go. Should not be a big deal.
7c33a3abacb0728b5129e58f73acd6de_zpsuflgddkw.jpg

Have a new Barrett clutch and clutch rod O-Ring kit to go on.

Few other small jobs got done.
-New plugs
-New crank seal
-Test fit the fairing
-Painted a few small brackets.
-Adjusted the clip ons

I have been accused of spending to much time polishing a bike that is still not running.
That is a fair statement.
I heart this polish.

I think they will be to long for the Commando. Will see if they will work on the Seeley though.

O ring mod.

Was kind of bent because the O-Ring that came with the nut was broken, but nothing a Harbor Freight kit couldn't fix!

Clutch properly shimmed and new plates (Branet) installed.

Have I ever told anyone how much I HATE doing electrical?

Got to the point that when I hit one button on the bars that one light on the gauges lite up.
Other then that nothing is working yet. Factory diagram sucks. Lucky Google is filled with pictures.

Plan to read up on a few things this week and hope to get some spark on Wednesday.

Getting ready for the next project on the bike.

Spent last weekend with some good friends looking at some epic bikes, so not much work got did....lol

Still messing with the harness.
Slow going, but honestly not rushing things. It will get done exactly when it gets done.

Did mount the fairing to make sure I had all the correct parts before doing any real work with it.

hows about you tell us about that car in the background that looks to be getting some positive pressure upgrades being installed on it? Is that a Corrado?

Winner!

Such and epic collection there. Never knew about it.

The place is better than Disney for sure. I have to look but there is a private museum by there you can get into on weekends sometimes if someone is hanging out out front, Just a pole shed off the hwy with some really interesting stuff from wars and some customs some real old unrestored bikes

Friggin' awesome place...my feet were aching like hell when I left there, so much to look at!

SHE RUNS!
Well kinda
Sorta.
Actually not really.
But really close.
Okay I lied.

Either way it is moving along.

Was a beautiful weekend. Had some friends in from out of town, so not a whole lot of wrenching.

Got most of the harness sorted.
Now the headlight is working all the time. High Beam only comes on with a push of a button (no on all the time)
Horn
Brake light switches are run.
Think I have all the grounds in the right spot.

Also got the Tri-Spark installed and I think the timing is spot on.
Took a few tries to get the unit to spark. Not sure what I was doing wrong.

Basically installed it, nothing.
Fucked around, nothing.
Took it all off, and reinstalled.
Now everything is good.
I will take that....lol
52B84FD7-07ED-4A3D-BD7F-9D6E09E2A402_zpsx5vqo1r4.jpg

Some better beer too.
That probably is what sealed it.

Blasted and painted the last of the exhaust mounts.
This week I will mount the exhaust, finish the last bit of the harness and get ready to fire this thing up.

With the weather getting nicer and the bike so close I find myself with new found motivation to wrap this up.
Still lots of little things, but nothing is ever done anyway.

Will be sitting on a beach in Aruba all next week, so that will eat into getting this done.
But that is kinda a first world problem....

I spent two days there a few summers ago. My friend Nub paints for OCC. He took me down there. I was truly blown away at the collection. Especially the vintage show bikes and trikes, Ness and Roth builds. Everyone should see it at least once.

Stole a couple of hours in the shop last night.

Got the ignition 90% wired. Mainly just need to route everything nicely now.
Kill switch works, replaced the whole key switch. Everything powers on and off as it should.
Need to figure out the Hi/Lo beam, but that is less important.

Had fresh crush washers and lock rings.
Installed the exhaust.

Started to mock up the rearsets.

New rubbers.
Need to block off some time to quietly mount all the exhaust hangers and passenger pegs.

Really starting to look like a motorcycle.

Plan to clean the fuel tank Friday. Have new petcocks.
Might even get it fired up!

Excited to be getting close.

Lets start with this......

So I got it running.
Settled right into a smooth (for a Norton) idle right off the bat.

VERY happy!

So far I have done ZERO tuning to the ignition or the carbs.

Always good when fun parts show up.

Things I got done today
-New foot pegs installed
-Braided fuel line
-Cleaned the tank
-Fresh fuel
-Set timing
-Installed exhaust
-About a quart of 85/140 oil in the gear box
-ran the choke cable
-ran throttle cable
-Recharged K&N air filter
-Installed new petcocks

Still need to
-Install chain
-Rebuild master
-Rebuild rear brakes
-finish installing the harness
-figure out new braided front brake line
-Tires
-Oil in forks
-New windscreen
-New shocks
-New brake light
Few other small things

Have come up with a few questions.

Anyone have any pictures of how the rear exhaust mount should be? I have the left side squared away, but the right is all messed up.

Windscreen
Hardware/mounting items
Shocks
Few more harness connectors.
Replacement rubber exhaust mounts (still wish someone would post a good picture of how they right side should mount)
Tail light bulb
Tail light lens

Are all on the way here.
Really nice to be coming down the home stretch.
Also really nice that it has been in the 40s so not feeling bad......

List of things to still do is
-Install drive chain
-Check fluids
-Install tail light
-Finish installing harness
-Hook up charging system and confirm it is working
-Install shocks
-Mount windscreen
-Rebuild brakes.
-Fork fluid (any recommendations here?)

Really fairly minor stuff.

And since no good post should be made without a picture.
Just something I am still thinking about doing with my 750 Commando next.
07_08_2015_Gasbox_Norton_Commando_051_zpsl4dt3amy.jpg

Really starting to cross off a lot from the "Honey Do" list on the bike.

-New "Girling replica" shocks installed.
Also, WHY THE HELL do you need to take the brake drum off to put the lower shock bolt on?!?!?!?!?
3A453921-26BD-46F6-9338-F2AD13D6FC63_zpsbu3kqloo.jpg

-Lower part of the fairing is getting that crack repaired....with a very ugly fiberglass patch. I will spay it black to hide most of it. Not a pro job, but im not a pro.
Windscreen came in. A little pricy, but nice quality and will finish off the bike well.

2DA7F043-4715-46B7-8B43-3D2FF87F2DE7_zpsjwjnmojl.jpg

-Rearsets are all back together with new rubber. I need to rig something so the footpeg can be left "up" for kick starting though.
45576A7B-394F-45CB-ACA9-3BCA121B89C2_zpsbrt9cvcz.jpg

-Rebuilt the master. This was WAY easier then any Honda I had ever done! And cheaper!

4D1CF3F0-33FA-4479-AE58-F5C4348F8DAD_zpsagknctau.jpg

-Got the bars adjusted so the master just tucks under at full lock. They are a little lower then I would have wanted, but I will get used to it.
12D0E074-59A1-48FC-93BC-490024A7D939_zpsdseazif3.jpg

-Remounted the right side exhaust. It isnt perfect, but will work. Need to check for leaks.

Still have a list, but things are moving along. Might try and take it around the block this weekend.

Does anyone have pictures or a diagram showing how to mount the reed valve check?

-Figure out what to do with the wheels. IF keeping the stock wheels I need to order tires, if running the campbery wheels I need to get fixing.
-Fork fluid
-Primary fluid
-Check that the charging system is working
-Install fairing
-Install check valve
-Adjust valves.
-Figure out front brake line.
-Adjust cables
-Tighten everything
-Set Isolastics
-Secure battery.

I installed the windscreen, and tried to cheat.....so it cracked.
VERY pissed, but it is small. If you are not looking for it you would miss it.

Most important thing is I actually took the bike out last night!
Went down the local car/bike spot for some ice cream and shit talking.

No funny noises, issues or leaks.
Well until I put it back into the garage and it became all british.....
41E75DF0-9A94-49B4-9756-87372BB12C35_zpseblrf8hq.jpg

Think it is one of the lines that needs to be tightened. No big deal.

Night was not without some issues.
Few things to wrap up before the bike can be pressed into daily use.

Number one on the list is to sort the front brake. Yes I rode the bike the 2 miles to the ice cream shop without one.
I bent the factory hard ling to work with the stock rubber line and the AP caliper. But when I rolled the bike the rotor contacted the caliper.
There isnt really any adjustments with the way the brackets mount. Maybe the rotor isnt 100% centered?
D9731B09-7CF0-4C72-A694-E7AE203363B8_zpsvh6qjrgt.jpg

Still need to mount the reed valve check valve.

Anyone have a way to check if the charging system is working?

Very happy that the bike was able to move under its own power.
Really sounds great.
Whole bike has a tone of character.
