Brother you got a great deal on your CB450 and it looks really nice!

Re: 1968 Honda CB450 - "Bangarang"

Hit the rear fender with some gloss black this afternoon.
I'm still de-rusting the brake light bracket.

Re: 1968 Honda CB450 - "Bangarang"

So yesterday was a little annoying.
The bike is currently kick-only. The starter motor works but it sounds like there is no chain from the starter to the motor, so I've been kick starting it.

Yesterday? Nothing. It turns over and goes "put put" but doesn't start now. Gonna dive into that after class today.

Meanwhile, I started painting and sanding. Still gotta pick a color I like.

Stay tuned!

Here's a pic for the starter clutch

Parts page

23, 6, and 5 are the rollers caps and springs that are part of the clutch that will either be worn out or stuck. 21 (3) are the bolts that hold the cage to the back of the stator and they will sometimes loosen up and shear off. Of course someone could have removed the starter, let the gear and the chain fall in and then put it back in. WOULD be a good thing to take a look at IMHO. ;) before the engine locks up.

Re: 1968 Honda CB450 - "Bangarang"

Nice! Thanks! If I do need to rebuild I know where to start.

The PO used kick to start as well. It honestly sounds like there just isn't a chain from the starter motor to the crank shaft. The electric motor spins freely, but you tell its not pulling on anything.

I stripped two of the phillips head bolts trying to get into the case, so I've got to deal with that first.

Re: 1968 Honda CB450 - "Bangarang"

OH yeah, this will help IMMENSELY with those screws

http://www.harborfreight.com/impact-screwdriver-set-with-case-37530.html

If they are really stripped, take a flat faced punch and a hammer and beat the metal back into place, more or less pushing the star points down. Then take that impact driver and give the offending screw a good whack with it and I bet they come out. Use the driver on the rest as they will all likely just pop right out after.

I also recommend a set of these.

Never have to deal with the screws again as they are Allen screws and they are all nice and shiny too.

Re: 1968 Honda CB450 - "Bangarang"

For $300 you basically stole that thing! That's awesome! I can't wait to see what you make of it. Love that exhaust pipe; I hope it's in good shape for you!
I had a '74 for a while, and loved it, but it was super-clean, and I didn't have the heart to chop it up. Sold it to a collector and moved on.
Have fun with it!

Thats kind of how I feel about this one. I don't want to do anything too crazy to it, its just too nice already!

Got some paint thrown on the fender and brake light bracket today, doing the Duplicolor lacquer tomrorrow, will take pics after I get it all reassembled.

Starting to realize that this doesn't much belong in the cafe racer category, its just too nice to chop up. May have it towed to the "specials" category after I figure out just what I'm doing!!

Re: 1968 Honda CB450 - "Bangarang"

Yeah do what frogman said and pick up a impact screwdriver set. I wouldn't really suggest Harborfreight as I went through two of those removing the bolts on my engine. It works but sooner than later you will start twisting the tip of the bit off.

Yeah thats a great deal you got. As for the starter I would remove it and put a plug there. Kickstart FTW!

Re: 1968 Honda CB450 - "Bangarang"

Got the fender, rear brake light bracket/license plate and right rear indicator painted up this past week or so.

I'm going with a graphite gray/black theme with the bike. I think it looks pretty slick. Still waiting to do the tank and front fender and front indicators. I'm not touching the tank until the paper work for the title is done. Most of the paper work asks for original color and I'd rather leave it until this titling issue is straightened out.

Decided not to cafe the bike... it was just in too good of condition to start chopping and welding on things. If there is a moderator around... maybe tow this to "specials" or something like that.

Man in that last pic that sprocket looks like it is shot! Might just be my eye's though.

Re: 1968 Honda CB450 - "Bangarang"

I took this photo at night with Instagram, so it's a little off. The sprocket is good!

Thanks for looking out!!
