1974 Yamaha TX-500.....Rebuild time!!

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Bikes looking good bud 8) do love a good score :D

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Got some goodies from DCC today. Dunstal style mufflers, brat seat and vm32's.

The carb boots are a little loose for the vm32's. I do know that when I had my cb360, the boots fit 32's real well. Curious if those boots would mount on this engine. Anyone have some loose that they could measure?

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

The TX has oval shaped intake ports, so I'm pretty sure it's best to stick with the stock boots. Initially I used some scrap nylon sheet from work as a shim around the carbs, now I'm using strips of inner tube sealed together with rubber cement to prevent air leaks. Might be worth a shot.

Cool idea. I'll give that a try. Thanks bud!

So do they work fine with replacing the clamps or did you have to do anything else to the boots?

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Ok. Just mounted the vm32's using inner tube rubber to give a better seal. Looks like it may work. Wont know for a while.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Really like the look of this bike. I hope you keep the factory paint on that tank- was always my favorite of all the bikes I've owned.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

She runs! Ran the bike down the street with barely a rear brake. Front brake caliper is fixed. I finally got one of the pistons unseazed. New seal kit on the way. Mikuni's are hooked up and working great. Had to go down one size on the jets. Still needs a little fine tuning. Still need to figure out how I am going to mount the seat. Also need to get a shorter battery. Sits a little to high so I swapped it out with the one from my CB350f and gained a little more clearance with the seat pan. Just need to wrap up the electrical and clean it up a bit. Will post pics in the next couple of days.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Something just doesn't make sense. In the past, My cb360, cb350 and cl175 build had so many damn wiring and carb issues. This bike has been a damn pleasure. First time using Mikunis and they have been real easy to work with.

Anyways, I got my seat mounted......it will work. Not exactly the way it will stay but it should work. Front brake is on and going. New seal kit is not in it yet but it seems to be holding up just fine. Since I am not running a standard headlight bucket, I have a mess of wires up by the stem that I need to get sorted. The front tire is BIG. I will be going down a size here in the future. Handles a little different.

The tank is going to get painted in the same sapphire Yamaha blue. May be a few months though. Other than that, I think I am done.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Out standing sir came out nice :)

On the wiring behind the headlight could mount a small black box behind and between fork tube to hold the wiring ? Not sure which HD runs them think FatBoys have a cover plate over top of the trees. Something like that black could work too ?

Good idea. Will look into that more. Also, forgot to mention. Here is how mounting the carbs ended up. Had to take a dremel an grind out the lip on the interior of the boot so that the carbs could slide in further. Worked well but clamping them down cracked the boot a little. Black RTV fixed that.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

Yep same thing happend to me sir !

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500

I really like the fresh paint color.
but now that you got a kawi-green yamaha, I know its not actually Kawi-green, but close enough...Im color blind.
youre gonna need a yama-blue honda
and a honda-red kawi.
I dont even know what you would do w a suzuki! Maybe go crazy and paint it yellow.

Im gonna start my 67 mustang project "someday"...I plan to paint it kawi-green.

Re: 1974 Yamaha TX-500 Tank is painted

I knew I was gonna get shit for this color. :p

I was going orange on it but since I work at a prison and the inmates wear orange it wasn't worth the crap I would have gotton from my coworkers.

The gas cap and side covers were painted satin black. And thanks to Dreadrock for sending me a side cover clip. Dang things were hard to find.
