New coating on a shock

Been Around the Block
I bought a monoshock off a VL800 that I'm gonna reuse on another bike. But the coating on the actual sprint is pretty beat up. I'm not honestly sure what material it is, if it's a rubber or a plastic, has anyone ever replaced the coating on a shock or have any advice?

Thanks

Strip the shock to get at the spring. Rub down the spring and touch in any bits by hand. Then slide a length of electrical heat shrink sleeving over, attack it with a hot air gun, and you're sorted. Tough, durable, rust resistant, flexible, and available in load of colours. Depending on the spring design you may need to leave the last few cm of spring exposed at each end so it seats on the collets.
