What did you build this week?

Put together a neat little work light. Ducati hub and a stand light donor... maybe this one won't fall over with the heavy LED lamp

I had a set of Pioneer tower speakers that didn't make the trip when I moved down south last year. So I tore them down, took out the components and put them in a checked bag on my last flight back.

I built some 3/4" MDF cabinets using all the same dimensions as the old ones. They sound MUCH better than the 1/2" particleboard of the original cabinets.

Pieces cut out.

How did you get that finish on the MDF?

Did you upgrade the capacitors while you had it apart?

They look fantastic!

Thanks! I didn't do any upgrades to the hardware but I plan on it in the future.

I had quite a few mishaps with the paint. I started out by sealing the edges with joint compound, super important because the edges of the MDF will just keep absorbing paint. I ended up using a roll on latex primer and Rustoleum gloss black oil with a roller after having a few fails with rattle cans. I did a few rounds of wetsanding with #400 in between. There is quite a bit of orange peel and they look better in the pics than up close in person, but I'm pretty happy with the finish.

Would you recommend using bisquits?

They are great for joinery. Super quick, you barely even have to make accurate registration marks. I was able to get a biscuit cutter for about $60 at Harbor Freight, and it works really well. I use them any time I have to make 90 degree joints.

I have one but I have not used it on MDF, just edge to edge hardwood. I have used MDF building speakers but next time I think I will try Baltic Birch, which is not quite as good as MDF but the sawdust is not as much of a problem. This plywood has no voids, like most North American plywood and comes in 5 x 5 sheets.

Made up a crude tunnel boring bit lol it did work went under a 4' sidewalk in about 15 minutes drilling clay

Tune that's pretty damn cool.

ADV those speakers look great!
For MDF try Bondo, I've had really good luck with it.
You can put an ultra thin layer over the outsides too and sand it back to flush to get a paint ready surface.

I bought a pair of rectilinear highboys a few months ago (fuckin awesome speaker). They sounded completely different than my center channel though so it made movies with surround odd to watch. So I decided to buld a center to match.

Scored some 1967 Phillips mids from eBay and built an elcosure for them from leftover cabinet ply with a walnut box. Put some Dayton drivers crossed around 400hz for the low end and a Dayton tweet at 3000 for the highs. The thing sounds amazing.

Im still waiting on the speaker fabric to come in to match the rectilinears.

I use bondo even to fill knots or splits in old wood doors, trim and such when restoring for paint.

Nice work! I like that you used a single tweeter (unlike most centre channels) so you will have fewer, if any, combing issues.

Thanks! Yeah my hearing barely extends past 10Khz these days anyway ha!
Multiple tweeters make for some weird sounds in my experience, and I did not feel like spending 2 months modifying crossovers to get it to work perfectly (nor dealing with the angry fiance every time I steal her TV speaker haha), this was more of a simple rough and dirty build. Used driver's I'm familiar with and crossed by experience and it turned out pretty well. Not perfect, but close enough that no one but me will ever know!

Thanks sonic! Was my first and definitely not last time working with MDF, I definitely learned a lot about the material. That center looks great, I bet that system kicks some ass.

Helmet lock relocation brackets for the ZG1000. The helmet locks got covered up when the hard bags are installed. Not anymore.
