refurnishing tank badges

Been Around the Block
thought i'd post some pics of my refinished tank emblems.

i sprayed them with krylon semi-gloss black paint, waited 10 minutes to dry and then sanded them (dry) with 2000 grit sandpaper on a hard rubber sanding block to expose the silver letters. (sandpaper and sanding block from the auto body section of cdn tire). i was happy with results....a nice understated look.

Now Thats Fucking Ingenious!!!...
I love that look... I have all these tank badges that I was wondering what to do with.
Im not crazy about the stock whote lettering!!..

Great idea..

One other thing, on the first tank, did you sand it down and polish? If you did, what did you use to keep it from rusting? Clearcoat?

i haven't got to that stage yet.

I like a dull satin finish, which is easy to get with a coarse 80 grit sandpaper, but it leaves lots of scratches in the surface. the finer sandpaper gets rid of the scratches but gives a gloss finish. the polish gives a gloss finish too.

so i'm thinking of sanding it with fine sandpaper, and then use this satin polish:

I did the same thing with my tank, (sanded to bare metal and buffed), then used lots of clear coat but the clear cost doent really stick to bare metal very well.
The probem is how to keep it fron rusting

i think i'll spray gray primer on the underside of tank and and just use the matte polish on top.

if you like a gloss finish this sounds like a good polish:

I did this a few times before with Honda badges with great results...
Kinda gives the badge a "MadMax" look ...
