First build 76 CB750F... Lots of photos/videos

Yeah Son!
Hey everyone. Been lurking and reading around here for a while. Love DTT, there are some really smart people here and some amazing rides. I finally picked up my first bike since youth motorcross days 20 years ago. I've been wanting a classic Honda for several years now and finally picked one up. Found a 76 CB750F on eBay that is actually in really good original shape. Really pretty as she is. I am going to do some stuff (already started) but my goal is to be able to return it to stock if I ever want to in the future. Here is what I have in mind.

Clip on bars, shaved top triple tree, new mini-gauges, new led headlight, new controls, levers, switches, new front master cylinder. - All on this is in progress now I'm calling it the front end overhaul.

I also took off the stock airbox and installed KandN filters. New fuel filter and lines are on order.

Next I want to do rearsets, already picked them up from Joker Machine and then a new seat. I am working on a design that will be convertible between a solo cafe style seat or a custom two up so I can take the ladies for a spin (wife and daughter) . I will also be working in some really stealth passenger footpegs at some point.

Again my goal is to give her a classy look that pays tribute to the original design. There will be very few minor frame modifications and all parts I remove will remain in tact and be able to be reinstalled someday. Going to be tricky with some projects I know but I think I can figure it out

Finally once I have the bike looking good I am going to pull the motor and have it gone through really well. Any suggestions there would be appreciated as far as what to do to keep it close to stock, but I am willing to do some engine mods to get some more horses.

Here are a few pics before I started anything.

Re: First build 76 CB750F... yeah another 750 :)

Spent the last few days reworking the front end a bit. Shaved and polished (but not too shiny) the top triple tree and made this custom gauge and switch mounting. That is a stainless push button start switch. I need to get some black allen head bolts for the triple tree to continue the black and polished theme. Replaced the fork top caps and the steer tube cap with black aluminum from Joker Machine. New clipons, throttle body, cables, clutch lever, master cylinder, custom front bake line from Speigler.

Installed a sweet minimalist turn signal switch and hi/low button on the left side. New LED headlight (not sure i am crazy about it now that its installed, we will see.

Painted the fork legs, going to paint the front caliper and install next week along with a black aluminum fluid reservoir I have coming.

The punch list of projects is growing every day ;D

Started making my seat pan today. Happy with the results so far.

Video of building a steel seat pan in less than 3 minutes. ;D

Did some work on my project the last few days.

I was not happy with the previous rearset brackets so I made some new ones. Borrowed the idea from a few other guys on here but added my own twist.

These are out of 1/4" steel plate drilled for lightness. Probably overkill but I wanted them strong.

I like the tucked away location of the linkage with this set up. Still need to sand and paint. Should look pretty good.

Got my 520 offset gears and chain from cognito moto. Very nice stuff and muck lighter than stock steel rear sprocket.

Now I can run my 160 tire no problem. Plenty of clearance.

Thanks Pilgrim, i do tend to get obsessive about projects and work my nuts off until they are done. Im going to have it back together before labor day and ride it this fall before I tackle anything else.

Seat looks good - props for the workshop baby sitting contraption & the Junior Kimbrough.

Drilled and polished the drive chain cover this morning before work. Used 220, #2 steel wool then 00 steel wool. I don't like the mirror finish so this is just right for my taste.

curious what gauge metal you're using for the seat and what you're using to do the welding on it?

I'm getting ready to tackle my seat and I'd rather go with metal than fiber glass.

All in all, it's looking nice!

I used 18 gauge. I weld with a small wire feed welder it is a Hobart 230V model but there are several others out there. Using flux core wire on very low heat. Just have to go slow and spot weld. I like the durability and classic look of steel too. Fiberglass looks cheap and tacky in my opinion. Plus i can always turn my cowl into the oil tank in the future. Thanks man.

Thanks man! That's the same style welder I'm using.

I tried filling some pin holes on my gas tank with it and blew right through the metal so I'm trying to collect info before tackling a seat to make sure I don't go too thin and ruin that too.

what diameter wire are you running?

I use .30 but with a .35 tip so that the wire feeds freely. I also turn the wire speed up a bit to make sure there is plenty of material to quickly fill. And I use the pulse weld method. 1 sec on, 3-4 sec off. Etc. gas tank is pretty thin, maybe 20 gauge or even 22 so will prob require tig.

Interesting. I never considered running a larger diameter tip. I'll give it a try and see if what it lays down.

The gas tank did end up needing to be tig'd but it seems like it's going to work out.

I love assembly days. Installed new rearset brackets, installed rotors and rebuilt calipers. Oil pressure gauge. Under seat electronics tray.

I hate it when this happens but after reassembling everything there is a part left over I thought is was a rear axle spacer but I can't figure out where it goes. Everything is assembled and working. Embarrassed to ask but who knows where this goes?!
