Honda CBX 750 F brat ish

Got this for a steal and wanted a brat like bike. This bike is extremely rare in where I am. Probably the only one or 2. Another variant..a police version is more commonly available. Bought the bike with the help of a friend as the bike is in another state 3 hours flight away. Got it shipped to me.

Dont see much mod for this bike here. So just to share some pics of the project which is nearly completed now. If only I can squeeze some time from work to finish it and ride it.

Took it home and parked next to my suzuki gs550. Took a few short rides on it to know what's wrong and what's right about the bike.

found that the shocks front and rear are shot. Engine seems pretty good. Will not so much to it this project. Probably rebuild it after I ride it for a year or two.

The thing is I live in an apartment 28 floors up in the sky. nevertheless, the passion is too strong and I actually have a garage work space up there right on my balcony. Pushed the bike up the elevator.

Got it up and ready for tear down.

My initial thoughts was to
- tear down
- reduce as much weight as possible
- rebuild the shocks front and rear
- rebuild the brakes
- cosmetic touch up of engine
- replacement of wear and tear stuff
- modify triple tree to take risers handlebar
- some cosmetics on the stance
- rewiring and hide the electronics under the seat and clear the mid section

Begin tear down. Put on an old seat I have to have a feel.

As the days go by, I managed to change all the bearings in the swing arm, wheels, etc.

Removed paint on the items removed from the bike to prep for powder coating.

Amazingly dirty and neglected.

Found out that the front forks are totally gone. Stanchion is crooked and the anti dive mechanism is not working.

With a few weeks of sourcing, I got lucky and scored an entire yamaha yzf r1 front end for a good price.

The guy basically let me take parts from the wrecked bike for a single price....

Also managed to get a barely used yamaha r6 monoshock which is also needed since I can't find parts to rebuild the old shock.

Fab a linkage connector to match up the sizing of the eye. Will be temporary and machine a better unit once I know the height is right and rides well.

Managed to get a nighthawk tank on ebay with the cap and the petcock for and good price but the shipping is definitely busting my budget. Bit the bullet and got it anyway.

The front end took a bit of time as needed to machine as new stem for the R1 triples as I need 35mm more length to fit the neck. Also need to order a upper stem bearing that fits the dimension.

Mocked up the tank and the new front end.

Mocking up the front end, I realized the R1 forks are way too short. Needed to extend that at least by 50mm. Read from some forums it can be done using machined slip ons. Thought I give it a try.

While waiting for the machine slip ons extenders, powder coat swing arm is back and I started on the back end.

With totally no experience in fiber glass, decided to reuse the original plastic rear fender. Just thought cut it to the shape I want it to be.

Don't look so bad I think

Also realized the coned pod filters can't fit for the middle 2 carbs.
Bought some pancake filters and it fitted nicely. Rejet the carbs after cleaning them with dyno stage 3. I have no idea if this will work but it worked for my suzuki gs550..so I hope it will work

Will also try to see if I can reuse the intake sleeve from the original air box and mod it into the pod filters to avoid the vacuum slide blockage issue with cheap pods.
Another possibility is of course k&n filters.

Any advise would be welcomed...if anyone is reading this at all.

Some pics with the freshly painted tank and fenders. And the extender came back as well.

Changed the fork seals as it was leaking. Quite a tough one to do solo.

Fitted the rear fender and added a spring to pull it up.

Realised that the old seat pan from my suzuki gs550 just couldn't cut it. Decided to make a new one.

Decided to anodized the front forks together with the extender gold as well. I know some might dislike this but I thought just wanna add a dash of color.

I thought I rushed this thread and get all the pics uploaded since I'm stuck in a bus heading back from a co retreat.

Got the forks back and now it's gold...

Got the seat back from upholstery and pretty good for a 50 bucks job.

I'm happy with it albeit it's a bit squarish but that's due to my novice metal working skills.

Well..This is where it stands now....still have a bit to do before I can test it out on the road.

since I can't really start the engine as I'm in an apartment, will need to try it when I get it down to the car park. I guess the carbs will definitely need to attention with the pod filters.

Some pics

wanted to seek some advise from the gurus here on the monoshock.

I'm using fairly new R6 rear shock. I understand that this shock was originally mounted more horizontal compared to how I'm using it with the cbx 750 linkages.

I feel that it is too soft and wonder if it's because the way it is mounted. Is there any way I can make it stiffer like changing the springs and where to get such springs and how to do it right.

That's quite the transformation. Looks like you've got more builds going on your balcony, as well. Give you a lot of credit for thinking out of the box.

just changing the spring may not do it
is the shock same length as stock ?
does it have the same shaft travel ?
also those pancake pod filters are terribly small, not enough surface area and a horrible design you will never get it to run with any decent top end power ,too much restriction on the airflow
put the stock airbox back on

the orientation of the shock is irrelevant. altho some don't like being used upside down, probably those without nitrogen.

the length, travel, spring rate and damping valving/settings are much more important. i don't want to get all xb33bsa on you, but why did you think just fitting an r6 shock would work?

i actually dont have much knowledge on the shocks and parts are really hard to come by in Malaysia (where i live). So managed to get the R6 shocks so i tried it on. In addition, bit difficult to find info and mods on CBX750 F models.

Any advice would be appreciated

surely you compared the travel of the shocks, the spring rates, and length eye to eye ?
if you did not, put the wrenches down stop working on the bike and take the bus
just bolting on stuff like that without any knowledge is stupid and a good way to get yourself killed
