The Amalgam: honda past meets present, take 2! or 3?

The chain may be a little tricky since I have to use a 14t drive sprocket to match the 38t rear. Factory is 15/41but I don't see that available for the 450 wheel. Worst case I could go with a slider for the chain I guess, but don't think that's needed.
Don't know what year 450 this is, but your sprockets are here. http://sprocketspecialists.com/?s=Honda+cb-450&post_type=product If an exact match isn't there, they'll find it or make it. Been dealing with these guys for years. I like them a lot. If there's a cross reference on the CS sprocket, I may have an unused 15t that I didn't end up using on a CB750.

The fact that they'll make it is good to know. Ideally I need a 41t for a 520 chain, then I can keep the 15t front that's on the motor.

You might consider just fabbing the frame.

Basically that's what's gonna happen, but i want the 450 neck to register as a 1972 for the cheap classic insurance. 8)

Got to play today. The fitment is not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. I actually think it will drop in, just have to make new mounts. The downtube is the only issue but I already solved that one. I'll throw pictures up later once I put it in the frame.

Ta da!! 50 cool points to the first person that sees the glaring problem.

Did you cut the down tube?

This might show it better

Cut the downtube and bottom of the frame massively to get it on. The frame will not be hard to make work (i think)

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

Looks like the chain might be tricky to route.

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

So what are you going to do about that??

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

Motor doesn't have to be centered on the frame. I had to shift my XL250 motor to fit it well into the 175 frame. Could always move that down tube, too. Then machine a spacer to maintain the center on the swingarm.

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

Well... I think there 2 things that can be done. Theres a comfortable 7/8 inch there for a custom sprocket. I think itll also need a modifed or custom swingarm. Slight pain in the ass but doable.

May be an option too!

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

As has been suggested already, try moving the motor to the right as required and if the frame gets in the way, try a reversed dished sprocket ie a dished sprocket put on inside out. I just ordered a dished sprocket for a project where we are using a longer output shaft in the transmission and need t bring the chain back in line.

There's an easy 1/2 inch to offset it, so that may be the way to go.

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

Jack-shaft.

Custom machine the swinger to use a countershaft pulley coradial with the swing arm bolt. Run a short chain from the countershaft pulley to the swinger pulley, and the chain from the swinger pulley to the rear sprocket. Think of it as a Harley-Husqvarna Jack-Shaft CB450ish-500RR....

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

Pull the front sprocket and associated spacers off to see what you are working with. You might be able to switch the spacers around to position the sprocket more inboard.

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

I will play with it tomorrow. I'm fairly certain playing with getting the sprocket barely spaced off the cases, and pushing the motor 1/2 inch will get it to clear the frame. That shold move it in at most 1.25". The second part will be getting the rear sprocket offset at well.

Re: The Amalgam: Cb450 frame, cbr500r motor. What could go wrong???

Sprocket and a motor nudge is all you need, hanging perfect center is not critical for this one... CG will be barely effected. I would make very sure the sump is in oil with the forward cant or maybe get it up in front a little more.
