October 2013 XV750 Project ;)

Been Around the Block
Ok, well here we go. My first post! My 3rd build. This is a Son and Pop adventure! So any and every bit of advice is worthy and welcome. No Bad words please! My son is 14 and is as big as me, so I thought what a great opportunity to get him out of the video game world and give him something to look forward to, get his hands dirty and build something for him self when he comes of age. This is his bike!

1982 XV750. Bought it for $500, was sitting for 5 years, in some guys garage before he posted it for sale. Dont know if it runs, he said it did, when they started years ago.

So got it delivered, and Im sure im doing it all the wrong way, so my neighbor says ;), Thats just the way I like it, My way. So We tore is all down, and in the cleaning stage. Im going cafe style on this build, as seen on some amazing pics online cafe zero style. Not sure if I will do the front end with a super bike front end, depends what pops up, on Ebay for a reasonable price. Was going to do the rear tire swap. Although it still seems challenging even if I order the kit. Im no fabricator, but Ill try my best.

I will post all our pics as we go along on this adventure. One positive thing that we have already agreed upon, is the color scheme.
We are not doing the typical Black bike tank, as I have one of those already, and would like a change up. This one will be a white tank with a red stripe, and Yamaha red tuning fork circle on the side. He likes the idea of painting the forks gold, like the superbikes.

So anyways with out any more chatter here are the pics.

Not sure how to post lots of pics, so Ill just make new posts to upload them. I wont bore you with the entire break down of it, as I took lots of pictures.... Mostly for my own reference on where stuff goes ;=). So far, most recently as of yesterday, I took off the paint and most of the rust on the back swing arm, and put rust converter on it. Will be painting it soon. Also we lowered the forks by 2.5 inches. This is how it looks as we speak.

Im interested in parts people are making, such as a bracket to raise the tank, and sub-frames people are making for the cafe style seat. Im looking at getting the Roadster seat for it. Right now im just looking at possibly modifying my current sub-frame, Have no idea if that will work or not due to where the seat needs to be sitting. Also, I need to bring it to someone who can cut and weld a plate on the tank to give it a better look! BTW if anyone has links for new bars and both throttle/brake and clutch levers that would be great. Some people have mentioned clip-ons.

Thats all for now.
Peace
C. St Pierre

I have several build threads linked and will post them when I'm at a computer. You'd be well served to get it running before you tear it down further.

And welcome!

After I paint the rear swing arm, and a couple other things, as well as buff some of the obvious aluminum parts. I will play with starting it up and hearing the great rumble as it awakens from its deep slumber.

So with that it will be 1. Oil, Plugs, decent amount of gas in the tank, perhaps some carb cleaner..... I haven't taken off the carbs to have a look. Im kinda a leary about that. But I suppose it needs to be done. Then I can attach some electrics to it as they are as you can see just unplugged.

Starter, coils, battery, timing.

Im probably missing a bunch of other things, ;) but Ill figure it out. I know it turns over. Then I need to check for compression and all that, but that can wait.

Corey

Quick question, probably obvious, but Ya. I should probably reattach the mufflers, so there is no problem with the carbs running lean!, but for just a quick start up, just to see if it comes to life, do you think its necessary?

Doing the before after shots of the aluminum sanding, and buffing, its like the old song 2,4,6,8 who do you appreciate. all the way up to 2000 grit, then cutting and buff. Here are some pics of the things im working on.

Well, tried firing it up yesterday........ It said NO. So I took the carbs out and took the bottom bowls off, and the jet screws were all torn up, and jiggling around.... That cant be good. The dude who had it before mashed the hell out of them. No wonder it sat there for 5 years. Geez, so im going down to the bike mechanic today to get a diagnosis, before I proceed. Once this issue is resolved, I can continue polishing and cleaning. Need to get a variety of things for it.

1 Tank lift kit.
2. Cafe seat and Sub-frame.
3. Tank welded.
4. Paint.
5. Tach/speedo
6. Clip ons. and possibly new sportier grips and throttle.
7. Brake lever and brake oil tank.
8. Rear/front rim conversion kit.
9. a bunch of other stuff as well!

And away we go!

Some pics of the Carbs, and current state of disassembly.

I dont like the jiggy jets.... Not goodness!

I'll be following this thread too. Just starting rebuilding my friend's XV750 a week ago and just finished the carbs yesterday. Nice to see other virago's!

And thanks for the links Ard!

Ok, I just went down to the professional bike shop 15 minutes away........... and what did they say about my carbs........ How about...... Getting new ones. or at least Used ones... They are destroyed! Sad.

Explains why the bike doesnt start.

So... As this is a Father son project... and im trying to minimize my costs.... Im putting it out to the universe and all those awesome people doing projects. That if for some reason, such as changing to a on carb system or what ever.... Would you please be so generous as to offer a donation for a carb or anything.. That would help incredibly.

Ill post a pic of me and my son.

Thanks all!

Corey

Here we are at the beginning of the project.

Check with mad hatter at the virago tech forum, he has several parts bikes and is very reasonable on cost.

...that said, unless there's some damage you're not showing us, I would get a rebuild kit and use what you have. Are the diaphragms torn? Does the shop you visited do a lot of vintage bikes?
