Salzburg '73 CB350 - Summer Riding Update

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: one last item - mounting front fender

Well it's only taken a month for me to get my ass in gear to finish the fender mount. I've been riding the bike a bit and it seems just fine.

I ditched the stock steel fender bracket and made my own out of some 6061-T6 aluminum sheet. I used the old bracket as a pattern and mocked everything up with clecos. It's polished just like the fender and seems to fit real nicely.

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: Front fender is finished 100% complete!

Looks good, way more 'vintage'

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: Tuning the VM30s

Trying to fine tune my VM30s. I had a local shop give it a go and they screwed it all up. Said it was perfect and later find out that I'm getting something like 20mpg and black plugs. I've got my trusty wide band on it now and will do it myself.

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: 100% complete - fine tuning the carbs

Very nice fender, I like the way it look's sporty vintage. I prefer painted fenders though but to each his own on that.
Cheers, 50gary

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: 100% complete - fine tuning the carbs

Remember that the idle circuit should be very rich. If you go for 'perfect' stoichiometry on an air cooled, carbed, non-accelerator-pumped bike, you'll have no acceleration off of near-idle, and throttle response will be dull just about everywhere after that.

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: 100% complete - fine tuning the carbs

Also, you are using VM's..

If they came from sudco, or anywhere else, really, they are using 2 stroke 'primary style' needle jets. 4 strokes generally use 'bleed style' jets. There will never be a 'good' mix with the way the VM's come, which is really set up for 2 stroke snowmobiles. 1 angle tapers on the needles, 'wrong' needle jets, wrong throttle slide, and air-jets that really aren't correct. You can get top end good or bottom end good with the "primary" style of needle jets on your 350, but not both.
Usable, yes. Optimal for street use, no. Race track, kinda doesn't matter. Can dial em in for 3/4 to full throttle, and that's kinda all that matters in that case.

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: 100% complete - fine tuning the carbs

Yeah, but I think 9.5:1 air fuel at idle and on the highway at 1/8 throttle is *just* a bit too rich. Also 10.5:1 WOT is also a bit too rich. I have no clue what that guy was doing when he tuned it. I had a supposed expert tune it, in hopes of saving time to ride it in the summer. Well I'll just have to do it myself.

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: 100% complete - fine tuning the carbs

Very few people have gotten the hang of doing the VM series (as they come form sudco or DCC or wherever) going on a 4 stroke.
There are a few. They tend to be vintage racebike builders. They tend to charge for their work, and there tends to be nothing left in the carb as they came from sudco that remains.

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: 100% complete - fine tuning the carbs

Check out vm26-606 carbs, actually set up for 4 strokes, different slide size (and cutaway, etc) than the standard 2 stroke VM's, different venturi design, etc. Whole setup is for 4 stroke. Like I said, different overall than the 2 stroke carbs everyone is trying to pawn off as "bolt on" for your 350 (and every other 4 stroke bike, for that matter.)

Lemme guess, 190 mains on those VM's?

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: 100% complete - fine tuning the carbs

Send Cxman a PM.....this is his specialty, except he uses VM32's on the CB350's

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Update: 100% complete - fine tuning the carbs

Get some RD350/400 emulsion tubes.
You may have to get them from Britain or Canada
They use different style jets but it makes life a lot easier

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Riding update - Might sell

I'm starting to ride the bike more this spring and really enjoy it. I've got all the bugs worked out and the carbs sorted.

I may ride it for a few more months and then move on to something new. Anyone venture a guess as to what this may be worth? I hope at least what I've got invested into it.

Re: Salzburg '73 CB350 - Summer Riding

I've put some more miles on the bike. This past spring when I was starting it up for the first time this year I had a pretty big problem. The bike ran for 5 minutes and then suddenly quit. I finally diagnosed it as a faulty regulator rectifier. One of the diodes must have shorted inside and let raw 18volts of AC past it into my electrical system. I don't know how long it's been like that, but my super cool (and expensive) Motogadget flat quit working. I had to wait until a U.S. supplier had more in stock so I could replace it. I removed the Kohler rectifier and replaced it with a better unit from Electrosport. I also added an overvoltage circuit and a relay to disconnect the B+ lead from the reg./rec. if it would ever fail again.

Looking good, doubtful you'll get back what you put into it though (at least if you count the labor time - probably why I only buy bikes ;D )
Looks like a 10K bike, I would be happy enough to get 5K 8)
