I used a paint can opener to pry the ring open enough for it to slide off. That was the hardest part. After you paint the case make sure that ring is as flat as possible, I scratched the paint in a couple places where my ring wasn't quite flat enough. Then once the ring is back in place I bent it back into shape using pliers that I wrapped in electrical tape to protect the ring from scratches.
