Z750E 1980

Been Around the Block
Can anyone tell me if the 1981-on 'L' model swing arm - will fit the 1980 'E' model Z75o
I have just bought an 'E' and it's badly bent at the back.
The swing arms on E-bay look slightly different and appear to be short a lug or two- but this may be the photos

Advice needed

They should look like this "81e.
The rear chain guard mount is behind the shock reservoir.
The bracket for the brake stay is top right front.
Hooks for the brake line on the top.
And the shock mounts near where the axle sets.

I took the swing arm off - it came out with absolutely no problem - unfortunately, - this made me believe that it is not the culprit.
On further examination- there is a kink in the frame tube - this was behind the exhaust (didn't see it til it was stripped).
Looks like it's off to the frame jig guy for some work

You may not have to dissasemble your bike. Before you go any farther,
what caused you to think some thing was wrong. I need the whole story
to be able help effectively. Because the damage I see and where it's at
would not cause any issues. I have a simular dent on my down tube and
the only issue besides looks is it has a salvage title. There could be
something else causing whatever problem your having.

The bike is out of alignment- the rear wheel looks to be skewed in relation to the centre of the bike.
When viewed from the rear, the back shocks are not true - ie the external shock springs look to be bowed -the right side towards the bike and the left side towards the kerb (or road if you're in the states).
The rear light unit and saddle look to be in line with the centre of the fuel tank- but the wheel is about an inch to the left
I initially thought that the swing arms was bent (and maybe it still is), however when I stripped out the swing arm- the spindle came out as easy as anything- not bent or pressurised.
The rear wheel axle came out the same. this lead me to now look at some other reason for the misalignment.
On examining the stripped area- I now see that behind the exhaust (new- by previous owner) there is a kink in the frame and damage to the engine fins and casing - although minor it, it cannot be a coincidence that the exhaust was replaced and the damage is in the same area.
There are a few washers being used as spacers to line up the foot rest bracket and exhaust mount near the swing arm.
All this is looking likely to be a bent something- either frame or swing arm or both

I'll try to take a photo when I re-assemble -as it need ot have a SA and rear wheel for the frame jig

Thanks

David C

I put the SA and rear wheel back on so that I'd have a rolling chassis for the frame guy.
I lined up the marks on the chain adjuster and it looks central in the SA.
Photo 1 shows that the spine of the frame is in line with the top bracket (ignition switch)
Photo 2 shows the rear shocks under pressure sideways
Photo 3 shows the misalignment of the wheel maximum
The RH rear shock took a bit of pressure to locate in the lower bracket.
I've ordered a used SA anyway- so I'll send it along with the bike to the frame straightener

Any ideas would be appreciated

The rear turn signals lights are wrong also, they should match the front.
Have you measured the distance between the swingarm pivot/bolt to the
axle/spindle? Have you tried making the frame level/square with the lift?
Then measure from top of the top tubes above the air box down. Then
compare the measurement from the swing arm pivot and the axle/spindle.

I levelled the frame (bike) on the bike stand and measured as many points as I could - frame to the floor, frame to pivot points- various points on the frame to swing arm and heads stock.
All appears to be within 1mm.
The only big difference is the centre line of the rear wheel and the distance at the swing arm heights
It is still looking like a swing arm issue.
The SA I have bought should be in during the week- I'll fit it and measure again

I can't speak for this particular model of bike, but there are quite a few models that have the front wheel and rear wheel on separate centerlines.

If the wheel is tilted, obviously that's an issue. I'm just suggesting that you should check the manual and see if the wheel centerlines are supposed to be the same.

Your not serious are you?

I would have thought that it would be nearly a dictionary definition of a bike to have the wheels in line

Quick up date :-
Frame was bent at the rear section above the swing arm pivot by 11mm.
Looks like a side swipe in this area- it has now been straightened to with tolerance and it now looks to be in line.
Have taken the swing arm off to paint, as it has been rusting from battery acid (probably common in these machines).

Will load a few photos in a couple of days after I get the bike back on 2 wheels and cleaned up pa bit

Got the bike back in line, frame straightened, swing arm straight and painted.
Lacquered the panels for this year- will repaint next year.
Hope to start and run it over the weekend

Looks good. Could you show a better view of your exhaust system?

System is a motad 4 > 1, sounds OK not too noisy- seems to run well

Have not had it in traffic to check carburation
