The GR's motor is very good for desert rides on dirt. It's one of the sweetest running twins ever made.

I've got to agree with you there. The bike is such a blast in the dirt, but the 2.9" of rear travel is very limiting. Maybe some time in the future I can put one of the these engines in a real flat track frame...

I pulled the oil pan last night and drilled out the broken part.

Here's the damage to the piece I removed:

Good as new:

Unfortunately I found more damage while doing all of this:

Ouch! Guess there's a reason for bash plates on dirt bikes? ::)

Shouldn't be too hard to fabricate one with your skills ;)

Sorry to see the damage! BUT I'm glad you've found the forum. There aren't alot of us modding these GR's so this is great to see, my build is going much more slowly but getting there bit by bit.

I hope you get it all fixed!

Thanks for the injection of insperation.

Houston, we have a problem...

So I went to PMI in Pueblo yesterday and found a great track to ride the GR on. Then I decided to push it down some more technical stuff. I came across an unexpected ditch where I could either hit the brakes hard, and probably have an ungraceful crash, or gas it and jump the ditch. I made the logical choice and when I landed the jump I bent both foot pegs, tore off one of the peg rubbers, and punched a hole in the oil pan. Why, oh why didn't Swivel warn me of this engineering fault??? Time to fire up the welder.

I finally got around to building a skid plate.

I welded some nut to the back of a few tabs which then got welded to the frame as skid plate mounts

I wanted it for the ice races this Sunday so I didn't have time to order 5052. I had to build it out of 6061 diamond plate because that was available locally

It took me about 5 hours to make. It protects the bottom and left side of the engine because that is where I have had issues when dropping the bike.

I'll try and post some pics of it installed some time.

I recently took the GR on The Elephant Ride

And then I took it ice racing (bare tire class)

Fun bike...

Always with the suit. I love it!
Where's the pic of the bike from the left? We want to see that skid plate installed
