Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

You suck.... Just kidding, nice one. Looks like everything is there, and clean so it will come together quickly. Names are for tombstones.

Swan,
Thanks man, your 400f builds are amazing I hope to be somewhere near your quality and attention I detail!

I have a whole bunch more parts to get degreased but I ran out of spray.

After this it will be soda blasting and paint.
I think I'll paint the carbs as well, what's the consensus on that? I have them completely stripped down.
Are there any tiny vents I need to mask of before paint?

After finding a crack by the cylinder base and that godawful jbweld job I went ahead and ordered a new top case.
25+ shipping isn't too bad :D

Well this project just earned its name.
Project "replacement girlfriend"

Girlfriend and I just ended it. She hates bikes, so this one is her replacement.

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

sorry to hear that.. Lucky for me, My wife likes that I work on bikes. Likes it less when I ride, but she understands it clears my head and puts me in a better mood. There are girls out there that understand us! so keep wrenching and one will turn up. make this one awesome, then ride it to her house and do a burnout on her front porch at 4am.

Shitty to hear that, man.

? Are you replacing just the top half of the crankcase? Do not. Crankcases are matched sets and must be replaced in pairs. All the holes are line bored at the factory and replacing just the top cases may cause alignment problems for the internal components. The shell bearings for the crankshaft may be different too. Cracks can be welded (just did it on my CB750, see my thread). If you need to replace the crankcases I will GIVE you one of these matched CB400F crankcases for free plus the actual cost of shipping with a sellers statement and Bill of Sale so you can title it. http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=43751.0

Sorry about your girl, but your new redhead looks pretty hot.

Well shit swan!
I had no idea, ill hit up the guy i got the top case from and get the bottom one shipped my way as well. Shit.
Thanks a ton for the heads up man and the offer I appreciate it I just dont want to have to find a competent machinist

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

Yes, use a matched set. How bad is the crack on your original set? image?

1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

The crack isn't bad it's easily fixed, but someone must have laid it over at some point as there's a chunk missing of the gasket sealing surface for the alternator cover that's been "repaired" with jbweld, and that would take a good bit of tig work to fix

Ouch man, time I've got. Money is a little low.
Anyway, got the bottom case.
Ended up paying 80 for top and bottom in perfect condition (supposedly) so I'm not too upset.

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

This may be a dumb question, but if the crankcase needs to be a matched set, why would that guy sell you the top at all, or why didn't he at least tell you about it?

Anyway, I'm effing jealous over here. Great looking bike. Excited to see it all put together.

I don't think he knew, I actually asked him for the top only, so it's my bad there.

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

S,
Use your original shell bearings form your old cases in the new cases. Put them in the new crankcases in the exact same position and order (left to right and top and bottom) so they are matched with your existing crankshaft. Test the tolerances by using Plastic-gauge (any auto store will have it, ask, get the green strip), bolt the two halves together to the correct torques specs, undo and then measure the Palstic-gauge dimensions to insure they meet factory specs and your the new cases will work correctly with your crankshaft. See my CB400F thread for images of this. Good luck and post your results.

Decided I was tired of cleaning things, so I made a trip down to harbor freight, figured without a girlfriend I've got a bit of free cash. So I bought this:

Soda blaster.
Absolutely the best thing I've ever bought for the bikes.
It takes about 1/10 of the time of degreasing and scrubbing and it works muuuuuch better. It doesn't Hurt the rubber bits either.
