Hey guys!

My XS 750 combustion chamber gets an overhaul.
What would you guys use to get the black grime off?

I thought using a dremel with a brass brush with WD40 would do the trick.
Go or no go?

Cheers

I used simple green and a scotch brite pad on my GL heads when I did the new head gaskets. spray it on, let it sit, scrub repeat a few times and it worked well. then rinsed them good to get all the simple green off.

Just started on these.
The carbon build up is impressive, under the black 'coal' is a light grey layer which even harder to remove.
Wd40 and small steel wire brush works but I guess I will move onto a bigger brush.

Don't go crazy. It's just going to get dirty again. :p

Just get the mating surfaces clean and all the major carbon build up off.

Make sure you're doing your cleaning with the valve in place unless you'd planned on recutting the valve seats anyway.

don't forget all that lumpy black crap has the beneficial effects of helping break up the air flow and increasing the swirl effect as well as increasing the compression ratio...or am I just being silly (seems likely)

Valves are in place...its impressive how hard the build up is.
Gonna give it a go again today, the seats will be recut after cleaning anyways with new stem seals.
