Question about slide needles

Are the slide needles supposed to be loose, with back and forth play. Like, you can wiggle them. Or are they supposed to be tightened down with no play?

I'm having carb issues on a 1980 cb750f, with 83 carbs. I'm thinking alittle grit came out of my gas tank and the pucks aren't sliding well. The slide needles are loose, but when I broke open some spares I have the needles are tightened down.

Any info is good info

I don’t think they should slide around that much. I would expect a little play but nothing extreme. Ideally they should be snug.
