1975 CB400F Project "Replacement Girlfriend"

SONICJK

Reminds me of...me No, I'm sure of it. I hate him
So after a month of negotiations and delays I finally picked up my cb400f.
When I say picked up I mean he delivered it haha.

Anyway, basically the guy (really cool guy) just ran out of time with the project. He had over 3500 invested already and I picked it up for 1000 with a clean title.

Tons of powder already done, engine soda blasted, a box full of brand new parts.

This is going to be fun.

Ill get some pics up later tonight.

Sweet! Sounds like a great deal. Especially if allot of powder has been done. Pics man pics!

And there she sits.

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

WOW! Great score! I went and looked at a CB400F a few years back...locked up motor...no title and the dude was asking 1000. Needless to say i dont have a 400F lol!
Cant wait to see her all finished!!!

There are a couple disappointments,
First the exhaust is not stock! It's ceramic coated kerker. Not sure if that's any good ill have to look into it.

And second I really wanted to cut the rear frame and weld in a hoop and put a brat seat on her with a removable cafe bump, buuuuuut it's already powdered so I don't know if its worth cutting it up and re powdering it

I am absolutely floored by the sheer mass of parts.
New EVERYTHING down to the carb screws.

I'm pretty much speechless.

This is going to be a good one :D

I think the only things I'm going to have to buy are a battery and a couple odds and ends.

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

Wow, what a terrific project bike. Thanks for sharing.

If you are really keen on a stock exhaust system - I would be willing to trade for those Kerkers. : )

The kerkers are really light it's pretty impressive.
I just love the look of the stockers but ill be keeping the kerker for now haha.

I found a jb weld fix in the top engine case. That sucks.
Guess ill be looking for a replacement. Anyone have one sitting around?

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

Holy hell what a score! Looks immaculate!

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

Very nice, man. I'm on board.

The Kerker opens up the motor quite a bit. The stock exhaust (which is the most beautiful stock exhaust Honda ever produced) really chokes the motor.

And the ball is rolling.
First order placed.

Eastwood ceramic 2k high temp engine paint in aluminum.

I have gone the VHT route, it looks great but just isn't resistant to fuel. Carb leaks ruin a whole engine.
I've gone the POR 15 route, it looks like shit and is only slightly more durable than the VHT.

So god damn it I'm doing this right. Two part urethane should be about as good as I can get it. I have a spray setup so ill be spraying it which should be an awesome finish when I'm done with it.

First order of business was to build a bike table.
So 30 minutes and some scrap later....

And then I stripped her down to start fresh!

This bike is so pretty and so nice that I think I'm going to forgo the full on cafe treatment, and go more in the resto-mod direction.
She will be mostly stick looking with some updates.
Nicer seat, cleaner bars, etc. basically get rid of all the clutter and make her into a bare bones beauty queen.

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

Duplicolor high temp paint has always been very fuel resistant for me...after it's cured.

Nice score, sourcing all those misc nuts and bolts is always a PIA. Nice to have that done!

1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

Haven't tried the duplicolor, but I am a pretty firm believer in 2k paint. So we shall see how it goes.

With the VHT, two bikes ago I did the engine, baked it (in the home oven whoops) and then I was doing something boneheaded and sprayed carb cleaner directly onto the engine and within 15 seconds the paint was ruined. I'm hoping to avoid such frustrations.
I ALWAYS manage to forget a carb drain screw or a fuel line or something and it always makes me so angry when it ruins the paint.

Tonight was productive.
Got the engine stripped all the way down, my first time actually pulling everything out to bare cases, so lets hope i can put it back together again!

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

I'm in! This will be a good one - good luck!

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

Great find! I'll be following along. I like the quick and dirty bike table too, stealing that idea!

Re: 1975 CB400F Project "I'll think of a name later I'm too excited at the moment"

It is like the motorcycle version of a mail order kit car. Great score.
