89 cbr600 Baby Fighter! *Stage 2 Initiated!*

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

dude, do not wet sand the silver and lay down the transparent color right over the top of it.....wet sand it let it dry well then srapy from far away so it goes on kinda dryish....your sraying the metallic WAY too close and thats why its blotchy. nice light even coats from far away is the trick with metallic, you cant put it on wet.

To add to this- I did a gold top guitar with gold powder, and the trick was to spray where the flakes still stood up, which was in a dry, misting motion. It looks like you got your paint can too close to the tank. Don't wet-sand it, you'll lose the flakes. Instead, apply more flakes in a misting pattern. Then mist your colour and clear over top until your flakes are locked-in. You will be happy you did that.

This kind of thing is the best thing about the internet. Um, besides free porn of course. :-*

well when you wet sand metallic it actually cuts into the flake and makes the flake look weird.....either way whether its a solid color or metallic it sould always be wet sanded and gone over with another color coat before clear coat and the clear coat should be put on within 24 hrs of the color because its technically supposed to be a wet on wet application. i spray base coat and clear it within an hour so the clear actually melts into the base coat.

Either way- I say don't sand the flakes, as it will screw it up!!!! It really depends on the paint you're using... But sanding flakes will always spell trouble. We agree on that, right?

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Just did a ton of work on the bike and I actually got to ride it too!

In the past few days I've painted and cleared the tank and tail, hid the wires under the tank, and painted other unimportant bits and pieces. I still have to figure out how I will mount the f4 tail, but after that I should be good to go.

I noticed a slight clicking on the right side of the bike when the engine is on. It could need a valve adjustment. What do you guys think?

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Most likely a valve, be sure to take care of that before riding on! On DOHC engines it is detrimental not to let the timing slip out of too far or it will result in damaging every valve in the motor!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Thanks for the words! The timing seems fine, but I'm going to check the clearances. I wish it was easier to adjust the valves on this bike like on my cb450.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

i believe the tensioners on those are known for going bad....dont quote me on that but it does create quite a bit of noise when they go bad if im thinking of the right bike.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Good news! The loud rattling happened to be the rear brake reservoir rattling because I forgot to bolt it up lol!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I haven't had the motivation to update the thread in a while due to the enjoyment of riding! This bike is awesome!

But anyway, here is a few things I accomplished in the past week:

Tank Cleared. You can't really see the flake in this picture. It's really prominent in the sunlight.

Banana seat primed. It has also been painted and cleared.
IMG_4911.jpg

Wiring rerouted. It's still a mess, I know, but it's a lot cleaner now. I will be revisiting these extra wires when I get a new digital tach/speedo in.
IMG_4917.jpg

Silver ring around the headlight.
IMG_4921.jpg

Here's the bike jacked up. At this state, it's how I've been riding it. I'm contemplating on whether or not I should paint the rims a nice dark gold. What are your opinions?
IMG_4922.jpg

So far I'm waiting on my new tires to arrive. Once they come in, a buddy and I will be mounting them. I ordered some dynabeads to balance them. Pretty nifty I must say.

Here's a list of future mods:
- Stainless coolant overflow bottle
- Digital tach/speedo
- Bellypan
- Possibly paint the rims
- Do something with the headlight and brackets so it sits closer to the forks, or completely new headlight setup.
- 05 cbr600rr front end swap

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

something needs to happen on the rims... they just are way to flat... the headlight looks way out of place bud. even a smaller fighter style headlight would fit the flow of the bike much better. that seat looks great! i posted pics on my fighter thread of the over flow i am using out of a paint ball CO2 can

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I don't really like the headlight either, it IS out of place. But thanks for the ups! And an overflow on a CO2 paintball tank? I thought you weren't supposed to puncture those things haha! I should use a beer bottle or something LOL! So for the rims, it's either white, or a deep gold.

I'm thinking of doing a dual headlight setup, either mounted horizontally or vertically.

I think I like it vertically mounted like this:

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I really like the second one! But I'm really stuck on doing the vertical dual headlights. Something about it that just looks awesome. I'll check out the local auto store soon and see if I can get a pair for cheap.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

man with lighting, i do not cut corners man, cheap lights = crap lighting... not on a bike for me!!
