89 cbr600 Baby Fighter! *Stage 2 Initiated!*

Well here it is...
my "fighter" thread. I'll use the word "figther" loosely because I don't want my ass chewed up lol.

So the story:
I originally bought a cb450 and gave it a cafe racer style. In the end I wanted something modern; something that won't die on me. So I sold the 450 to a dear friend and bought this cbr600 Hurricane, which might I add runs EXCELLENT. $900 clean title with almost 29,000 miles. I don't think those are the original miles though.

So I just gave it it's first oil change today which was long overdue. The previous owner was a kid who just bought the bike to learn to ride on. The owner before him did all of these beautiful modifications. Zip-ties, superb cable routing, and fantastic spray jobs just ooze out of this bike. I also love the rear cowl front fairing mod...pretty creative.

My goal is just pretty up the bike from it's current state and make it my own. And I want to use it to attract the ladies...

I hope you guys enjoyed the pictures! I'll post detailed plans for it in the next post. Time to go to my welding class!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

ppppppplease fix the paint on the forks.. it looks like a clown bike as is!

This does look like a great starting place for a fighteresque bike. Looking forward to following this build.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

alot of cool stuff going on on this sucker! dig the powdered subframe! for sure!!!
your going to want to rebuild the front forks with heavier oil in it... get a FZR600 front fender has a much newer look to it... that will help on looks and diving...
dude we are going to be in the same boat! i am doing a street fighter now as well!!!!
looks like you have an aftermarket rear sprocket on it... lots of wires to clean up, got do get some kind of rear cowl on that sucker... i can walk you though how to do a wicked clean over flow bottle for the radiator... as well as how to chop and shorten that exhaust can! i would try and dump a CRB1000 tail piece on there or an R1... i am stoked someone else is doing a rocket... i need to start a build thread fro mine as well... next week when i get it in my shop and out of my brothers garage i will... here is the last can that i cut down... looks sick right

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Ha! The paint on those forks is hilarious. Looks like a nice raw clump of clay for you to mold into a masterpiece. I'm sure it will look as nice as Tabasco. Yeah, you should definitely set up some kind of removable rear cowling so you can give the ladies a ride. ;)

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

My buddy has the same bike in much worse looking condition. We've been racking our brains to figure out what to do with it. This vintage is not my thing and he has little to no vision and even fewer skills. ::) The bike literally has a sealed headlight bulb attached to the brackets without a bucket. I shit you not, no bucket at all. I will be watching and stealing from you liberally 8)

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Haha I agree with all of your comments! I think the bike would have been decent if the previous owner didn't spray it with a blindfold on.

So for the plans....

I definitely want to keep this bike as a two up, heck, I even like the open subframe with stock seat, shoot me ;D. Here are a couple of inspiration bikes:

Fathead's CBR f3 on customfighters.com:
picture.php

I am going to go with this candy red color pictured above. It is duplicolor Metalcast in red. I'd like to do that similar coolant reservoir, so hit me up with the details JRK!

Next is a bike from the cbr forums:

This hurricane has a cbr f4 tail on it. I think I might go this route because no mods to the subframe are needed. As much as I want a smaller back end, I must emphasize again that I'd like to carry passengers. I really like the cbr1000 tail section because it's sleek, but I don't know what mods I'd have to make to the subframe. Can anyone help out? Oh and I definitely want a bellypan!

Lastly: Buell xb9s

I just love the front end on these things! I'm going to try to replicate the windscreen/fairing and buy some dominator headlights from ebay. I also want to base my color scheme similar to the second picture. I really love the back end of the xb's so maybe I might be able to do something similar. Ideas?

I really don't plan to go too crazy on this bike, just some nice customization and a DECENT paint job LOL! Although I have these initial plans for the bike, we'll see where time takes it. ANY IDEAS? LAY EM ON ME!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I'm in need a new chain. Does anyone know which one I should get. JRK also mentioned that the rear sprocket might be different (not sure if it was sarcasm haha!) but I guess that'll come into account with a new chain that I need to buy.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Did you look on www.sprocketspecialists.com? They list the originals as 15F-44R with 530 chain. Any name brand 530 o-ring should do just fine

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Not sure about these rockets but you should probably replace chain and sprockets together. An old worn sprocket will eat a new chain.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

dude before you replace your old chain why not clean and service it... i am not being sarcastic that is an aftermarket rear sprocket, the stock ones where a off gray, that one looks polished or chrome. gearing is your best friend on these rockets. i drop down 1 - 2 teeth in front and it will really jump off the line like no other. for the cooling over flow i am going to get a metal water bottle like is below... all you have to do is run your over flow line from your radatior into the bottom of the bottle (cut the over flow on a strong angle so it does not suck to the bottom of the jug) then run another about 1/4 of the way in the bottle and run that out along the frame to the ground (the over flow) all you have to do is seal the top and make a clamp to hold it to the frame (i am going to take some alum and cut it to s strip and then bend that around the bottle with some 3m tape on the inside... then on the other side of the bike i will run my NOS bottle... will look much better and get rid of the stock ugly overflow... i work on alot of rockets, mostly newer, so i am going to take alot of what i do on them and apply it to my build... you will see what we have is alot alike!... ALOT... i will start a build thread after i get some solid pictures of my ride... i have already started on it a bit... when i got it it has almost 0 plastics...only the rear cowl... so i am cutting and shaving that down, glassing and undertail and adding my turn sigs into that... i got a tank cover recently, it has a Street fighter headlight kit on it... it is mostly about making it look cool and run like a rape ape... i have already high temp powdered the headers on the full V/H exhaust. it will look clean and new... i am styling mine off the ducati 2010 street fighter
I am going to build the whole thing ground up in 3 weeks... tons of powder, and airbrush work is the plan... i do not want to remove the motor!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Thanks Joe! I'm going to try to salvage my chain as well. I need to figure out what my front sprocket is because I'm interested in changing the gearing. I'm really not planning on removing my motor either.

Now I need to find a wiring diagram for this beast! Wiring sucks!!!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

there is no reason that you can not salvage the chain man... treat it, check to see if its an o ring or just a reg chain... clean it really well (how depends on what kind of chain) then just lube it. should be fine. to see what kind of front sprocket you have just count the teeth on it.

you will find wiring on these bikes are stupid simple!

didn't catch on to the sarcasm quick enough... until seeing the clown calipers.

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I just DID WORK right now. Not much, but a good start.

The oil cooler thing used to sit under the headlight here:
IMG_4852.jpg

Which I moved down here:
IMG_4853.jpg

I fastened it to the lower brackets of the radiator using wire. Self explanatory and it cleaned up the front a bit.

Then I cleaned up the chain. It went well.

Now I need to buy a 23mm or 24mm socket for the axle nut. That biatch is stuck and I don't want to strip it with an adjustable wrench. I have to adjust the tension on the drive chain. Some wise guy put the left chain adjuster in backwards so the reference markings are not visible. Looks like I'll deal with all that stuff when I change my tires and paint my rims. Boooo!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

nice, chain looks good! not sure that is a great place for an oil cooler where it is going to get beat on by road grime... but it may be ok... i like how oil coolers look so i like to show them off (as you can see on my cafe)
be sure you get some lube on that chain right away! i would sugest a "no fling" lube... i use that on all my chain bikes so that it does nto throw oil everywhere on the rims and crap. I forget the name off hand, but it has a picture of a bike chain on it (i am sure that does nthing to help you)

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I just lubed the chain with Dupont Teflon Lube. It turns into a waxy coating and I read it's pretty good for chain lube.

The oil cooler should be protected by the front fender for the most part. I guess if the radiator is down there, why not put the oil cooler down there as well? I'm also going to be running a belly pan so hopefully that will add some dirt protection.

I'm thinking about running a cbr f4 tail or a cbr600rr tail. What should I do as an undertail?

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I like Dupont's teflon Multi use spray for chain lube no "fling" and really easy to find!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

the f4 and the RR tail will have aftermarket undertail kits rampantly available on Egay!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

I just won an f4i seat on ebay for $36 shipped! Next I need to order an integrated LED tail light, seat pan, and possibly and undertail kit. Or Make my own haha!

Re: 89 cbr600 Baby Fighter!

Hello again!

I've done work for the past few days and so far I painted the subframe with a textured bedliner. Next I sanded the tank down, primed and painted it with Duplicolor metalcast red. The finish isn't smooth because I didn't completey sand down the scratches that were made using a wire wheel. Lazy, I know, but I don't care much. I'll do a better job on the tail piece. They will both be cleared in the next week.

Next I am going to shorten the wiring harness which should be tons of fun!

Sorry I have not provided pictures, but I will when I get home tonight!
