'71 cb175 take 3!

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

Good to hear! When I tested it the readings were 1.5 1.2 and 0.2. So it's not 100% that it's the issue, but when I should have had 2.2, 1.6, and 0.6 it's a fair bet that it is.

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

So I got my seat back from the upholsterer. What a shit job. The guy build a giant floating pillow and couldn't even manage to put the brake light on straight. After refusing to pay for the work I took it with me and decided to fix it myself. The cover he made was actually quite good, so I decided to remove all the excess foam and recover it myself. So at this point I've cut it down tremendously, and any suggestions on how to get the cover back on evenly and repack it onto the oem tack strip would be appreciated. I read somewhere if you put it in the dryer for a few min they are a lot easier to stretch into place.

Also, massive progress on the 550. We chopped the rear of the frame and are almost done making a new tail section. Thinking about doing a monoshock as well. I gotta say, once I got to bending pipe and making designs for it, I had to hold myself back from doing a whole new frame. So many ideas rushed into my head but ultimately decided to hold that off the the next one. Found a 400f motor and Ducati front end for a great price locally, going to build a frame around that, something very creative. Right now the 2 prevailing ideas are a drop seat rigid with a wider rear tire kinda low and pro streetish. The other is something lean and mean, with a Ducati inspired frame.

A little progress on the 550. Still a ways to go on the tank but you get the idea

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

So the cb175 finally has a seat now. Just waiting on my stator and I can finally get er done! Still a few minor odds and ends to finish, maybe an hours worth total. The only thing outstanding is the exhaust. The more I think about it the more I think I'm just gonna make my own.

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

Down to the short list on the 175. Was able to take it for a short ride today. Really runs well, just a little on the rich side. I should probably go to a smaller main jet, but until all the little things are done I'll hold off. I gotta say, even without mufflers (which I happen to really like) I felt like 175 or not there was a decent amount of power for such a light machine (still have to weight it but I'd guess around 220). It was a lot of fun to just tool around on. It was my first time riding with a speedometer, definitely need to go out with a friend on his bike to get a ballpark if what gear at what rpm equal certain speeds. I'll get a short video up soon. I kinda wound up with more of a tracker look than cafe, but I'm happy with it all the same!

That tank really looks nice, like it grew out of the frame.

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

Nice work all around. What color is the frame and tank on the 175? Do you have a paint code?

Thank you! The paint is impulse blue metallic from the 04-06 gto's. Just Google it and the code comes right up.

Some shots with the seat on. I have some videos riding it but I have to get them on YouTube yet.

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

Just caved and ordered exhaust. Gonna do up swept 12 inch mufflers. Also ordered some different sprockets to play with. 1 tooth larger for the front, and several different sizes for the rear. They were cheap as hell so I figured why not? I'd like a littler lower rpm for highway speeds, don't know if this little motor can do that though.

Thanks! http://instagram.com/p/y4VycyAp7A/ heres a video of it in motion.

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

Two steps forwards one step back:

My exhaust components got here, and I'm curious, how do most of you mount your mufflers to your bikes headers? I can't see any way to do it other than to weld them on. I was really looking to use this setup temporarily til I have the funds to do what I really want, and didn't want to have to grind the welds down later on, but there's too much play between the Id of the muffler with the adapter, and the Od of the header to be able to clamp it. I thought of trying to make shims out of some extra tubing, then try a clamping solution again, but I think that would be prone to leaking no?

Otherwise the bike is done. Mounted my tail light and licence plate bracket, now to just figure out the exhaust!

Can you squeeze a layer of pipe wrap inbetween the sandwich as a gasket of sorts?

Ya know I actually thought about it but wasn't sure if that would do it. I mean its not off by much, just a hair. I'd also have to put a slice in the muffler to allow it to clamp correctlu, but i dont care these are cheapys and i can hide it on the inside. I wonder how small a quantity of wrap I can buy....

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

And the exhaust is now on. Next issue is the battery. The 2.3ah of the ballistic 4 cell doesn't cut it, ordered an antigravity 4 cell at 6ah. Hopefully problem solved. Tha being said, couple of friends come by and took the 175 for a ride. Never saw grown men get so excited with 175cc's!

Sounds like you got it fixed, but something similar actually came stock on the CL175. Part #20

Well as I'm on a cruise and its almost 6am, to keep myself from going down to the casino this early I'll post some shots of the exhuast and plate bracket instead. Yeah that'll keep me occupied. Lol. I know many arent a fan of the axle bracket but i love it so here it is.

Re: '75 cb550 and '71 cb175 double build!

I like the color, the handlebars and the headlight bucket quite a bit. Whats up with the footpeg/shift and brake lever setup? is that permanent?
