1972 Honda CL175 - First Time build. Help!

Matt,
Try this seller. http://stores.ebay.com/Ultimate-Industrial-Solutions/Seals-and-O-rings-/_i.html?_fsub=9951969018&_sid=715393798&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322

I got the seal I needed for the cam shaft. It was about $6 shipped. You should email him with your needs since there are thousands of seals to sort thru.

Hope this helps.

You guess it! Clearance fail :( learning as I go.

Still need to actually rebuild the forks, but I'm tired of letting that hold me up.

Going to order different headlight ears, these stick out way too much, and look for boots.

I'm going to learn how to rebuild these carbs.

And what should I do reguarding engine? It's filthy!!!
I'm going to order a kit to check compression.

Any advice on what my next steps should be? Thanks for all the help so far!!!

Go straight to your local Honda dealer for all seals. They are not all that expensive and they fit.

might check this place for fork seals.

1. clean up carbs. Hold thumb over spark plug hole and kick her over, to check for compression. If it pops off, its better than no compression. add a teaspoon of marvel mystery in spark plug holes and a few squirts on valves, tappets, cam and such under inspection covers.
2. get her running w fresh oil. Until shes good and hot. This should free up rings stuck in pistons. Pull carbs & exhaust off.
3. test compression w gauge.
4 clean up that engine,...its filthy. or, Start collecting parts to Rebuild engine, if its hot compression reads below 140.

These are the carbs when I opened them, not too bad looking but I cleaned them. Also cleaned the engine as best as I could. I'm going to look into buying a media blast.

So I guess next step is put the engine back in and try to get everything running?

Also what are these?

Starter solenoid and main fuse.

Yes stop spending efforts and cash on making her pretty and get her started then you will have a much better idea of budgeting your time, efforts and money.

Hard to look cool pushing a pretty bike around town. ;)

BTW did you call my Honda shop about the fork seals, in the link I posted earlier?

No I will call them tomorrow, I kinda got discouraged with the forks and redirected my energy.
Thanks for all the help Trek, walking me thru this build!

Quick question lol

What size socket do I need to get the spark plugs out? I need to order one.

And what does the starter solenoid do exactly?

The starter solenoid is an electromagnetic switch. It will have two buss posts and two input wires. One post will connect heavy guage wire to the battery positive and the other will connect to the positive post on the starter, and (usually) one input wire will be grounded and one input wire is fed 12v+ by the starter switch, which is fed by the ignition switch or the run switch depending on your bike. When the starter button is pressed, 12 volts is sent through a coil of wire, creating a magnetic field that draws the post contacts together and sends power directly from the battery to the starter.

The reason a solenoid is needed is because otherwise you would need a much higher amperage starter switch to handle the current draw that occurs when engaging the starter motor. Hooked up directly to the switch, it can easily start a fire.

WTF kind of lazy ass bullshit question is this??? LOL

They invented a really handy chart...GIVES WRENCH SIZE OF ANY SPARK PLUG.

PS. If you were my kid, Id bop you upside the head. ;)

I am a city kid, building this in a basement!
Before I got this bike I didnt even own a set of wrenches :-\

Buy yourself a DIY craftsman tool set before you go any further. Also buy yourself about eight 10mm wrenches because those things have feet and walk away.

Nice explanation.

1)Got the engine back in! I want to try and get this started :/ I need directions!

2)This is the Tach cable right, if I don't run a tach I can just take this off?

3)What is this thing, on the top of the engine and what does it connect to?

4) Is this the electric starter motor? And this wire connect to what again? :/

5) what does the starter solenoid connect to?

6) Previous owner said it wouldn't run because of a bad coil he thinks, and he threw in a new one with purchase, but I have to make a mounting bracket because it doesn't fit.
I know 2 wire go to spark plugs, but what do the other wires connect to?

I basically want to wire the bike back as simple and barebones just to try and get the engine running.
What are the basics I need? What should I do next?

Most important tool in the toobox. Hows about a free CB175 shop manual...

AND bonus color wiring schematic

2)This is the Tach cable right, if I don't run a tach I can just take this off?

2 yes it is tach cable...No dont take it off. Oil may leak out when running...need a plug. I suppose you could pull the cable out of sheath (leaving sheath on motor) and hold the sheath up to keep oil in...maybe. Or remove it all...then clean up small mess. After you shut her down.

But, to permanently remove tach cable you need to plug the hole.

3)What is this thing, on the top of the engine and what does it connect to?

3 condenser (hooks to the coils and points) Also, I really doubt thats the mounting spot Honda intended. Seems like the engine would cook it.

4) Is this the electric starter motor? And this wire connect to what again? :/

4 Yes, and big wire is starter motor to solenoid ?

5) what does the starter solenoid connect to?

Battery, starter, rectifier and matching wires in harness (start button and ground)

6) Previous owner said it wouldn't run because of a bad coil he thinks, and he threw in a new one with purchase, but I have to make a mounting bracket because it doesn't fit.
I know 2 wire go to spark plugs, but what do the other wires connect to?

6 matching switched power wire in harness and the condenser.

Easy peasy coil and condenser test...only takes like 5 minutes to do...Matt wrote it, I added the pictures.
