'83 Suzuki GR650 "Tempter"

Pablo83

Sleep, wrench, ride.
I found this at the local pawn shop... $400.

It's a 650cc vertical twin. The crank pins are 180 deg apart for better balance, but this means the power delivery is uneven and it sounds like a Harley. The stock bike puts out about 50 hp. Here what the bike would have looked like new:

I've always thought dirt track bikes looked like a lot of fun. I've been planning a Japanese V twin tracker for a while, but when I saw how cheap this bike was I thought it would make a good practice build. Someone else out there has done a GR650 tracker. Here's what his ended up looking like:

I've posted this build on a couple other sites, so you might have seen it already, but I thought some people here might enjoy it, plus I have a question:

The foam on the custom seat is too soft. I need closed cell foam, but I don't know how dense. The seat has about 2" of padding. how dense of foam should I use and where do I find it?

The tempters are really cool bikes.

Nice swing arms on them as well..

Yoga mat for the seat?

Carpet padding. Layers of it. That's what I'm hearing. I've thought of the Tempter as well--great looking motor and the monoshock makes for a nice light look in the rear. I've bookmarked that yellow tracker in my own files. I'll be following this build, best of luck with it.

Pablo, you're on ADVRider as well, correct?

Signed up for this one.

Yep. I saw a couple other GR builds over here so I thought I would post mine here too. There seem to be more builders here also, so I thought I might be able to get some advice.

I cut out some frame tubes that were in the way. I welded in a piece of rebar real quick to make sure I could still get the engine in and out then I replaced it with a new tube that matched the frame

Nice! Is the last pic the current state of the bike? It's always good to see another GR build. What are the plans?

Low seat, scrambler style pipes, small tank, big K&Ns, custom seat/fender, small headlight, minimal gauges, minimal electronics. Currently the bike is running and almost finished.

High pipes, huh? Have you seen PeteGS's GS450? He had some pretty slick pipes made up.

No, where can I find it?

[EDIT] Found it. Nice pipes indeed. Mine will be 2 into 2.

I got a Kawi tank from CL, but it's too long for the bike

Wish me luck getting it all back together.
