The CJ360 Scrambler/Cafe Project

What about What?
So I started a new project. My dad had this bike sitting in his shop for the last 15-20 years, it used to run but when they moved up to the new property in the country on a long stretch of dirt road he decided it was to dangerous for him to ride back and forth to work. So it just sat. For fathers day I found him a TW200 and relieved him of the CJ. ;)
This is a stock photo I found as I didn't take one before I started tearing into it.

I am thinking I am going to build something comfortable, more upright. I love the way the rear cowl looks as a seat bump.

Bought some flat bars off of a old dirt bike. They feel great not too far forward.

Thinking I am going to run a single tach. The idea is to run a phone mount for the speedo.

I am using the headlight off of the CB450 as it is a bigger light (looks cooler in my opinion) and the headlight on the CJ fell apart as soon as I tried to take it apart.

This is my first try at fiberglassing my own seat pan. didn't turn out perfect but will do for now.

this is where it sits right now, I am thinking of doing a small curled up exhaust, but next is seat mounts and rear tail lights.

Had a few days to tinker before I started redoing all the windows in out house. In order to finish up the wiring I had to relocate the key to a new spot. I drilled out the headlight mount hole and fit it there, work out well.

After that I worked up a mount for the speedo.

Last night I decided to tackle the seat mounting issue. I ended up drilling a couple of bolt holes in the back and used the existing holes from the battery mounts. after that I did a LOT of carful measuring to make sure the holes I drilled lined up perfectly.

I did a small L bracket to attach the rear cowl. Now I just need brake light, grips, seat cover and a exhaust.

The bike went under the knife again the other night. I decided that I didn't like the rear buddy peg mounts so I chopped them off and ground out the welds. looks so much better. :)

Today I did a couple small things, lubed the chain, added some grips, and modified the old exhaust to make my own muffler.

The bike runs and sounds amazing. took it out for a spin around the block. So much fun, lol.

Looking great! 8)

Loving the skinny rear tire, What size is it? 100/90 18. Cherry Bomb is due for fresh rubber this winter.

It's 'almost' a shame to carve up a nice looking CJ but except fort exhaust it looks pretty good (not a fan of loud pipes for multiple reasons)

It is a 3.50S18 tire. Was on it when I got it, but yes it does look good on there. ;)

Yeah, was going to do a full restore but would probably be more money than it was worth since it is not a super desirable bike. As for the pipe I didn't cut up the stock CJ pipe, it was a old slip-on muffler that I had laying around and I shortened the baffle and slipped it back in for noise reduction. Worked out really well, has a nice throaty sound but not loud like strait piping it.

Okay yesterday was productive, I got in a couple parts so I finished some things. I rebuilt the forks, replaced the shifter shaft seal, added some new rear springs and attached the tail light and hooked it up. Everything went smooth. took the bike out for a spin and it was super fun. Seat is the last thing to do.
On a side note the bike starts up and runs fine just when I let it idle it slows down gradually and then stalls. Any ideas?

The 360s don't like a short exhaust. That might be some of the issue.

But based on the description of the symptoms, sound like you might be a little rich?

Either way, I wouldn't mess with the carbs until you've double-checked compression and ignition timing, though.

Cool bike......like the placement of the key switch.

Actually thought of doing my 750 the same way, just never did it.....lazy as heck, I am.
