This one is going to be for road, I have my trials outfit for the rough stuff, but it was hooning round the lanes on it with my mate and pushing it to the frame limitations that made me want to build something with a far lower c of g and more rigid construction.

Yep I think there needs to be a fair amount of gusseting added, that's for sure.
 
I'd hoped it was an optical illusion caused by the knobbly tyres, but on further investigation I have found that a little bit of damage to the right hand swinging arm stay has been pulling the rear end out of line. I undid the pivot bolt and sure enough the rear end sprang back into line.
So the first step is now to chop out the damaged section and find some correct gauge tubing to slug a good section back in.
 
So, big news is that the frame is pretty fked. I replaced the damaged section but then worked out that the pull was coming to the lower engine mount, swinging arm pivot being bent. Must have been some whack to bend that puppy.







I'm not too distraught ... I bought the chassis for the forks, at a very fair price for a pair of leading links, and into the bargain I've got 16" wheels and rims, and a good side car chassis. So now there will be a brief intermission while I find something suitable to weld it to.

I picked up and engine ...... nope, this frame wasnt designed for a CG lump.



Also picked up a frame, swinging arm and rear wheel.





Still figuring it out ....

 
Top frame rails and bottom cradle rail / outrigger first bend. When the three sections are aligned up on the welding table the second bends will be plotted. Looking good currently to be doing this on Friday.

 
I like the way you have laid out those parallel "jig table" concrete furrows !!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

SC - Rose tinted goggles ? In EVERY old timer's tool kit ! ;)
 
The sections have all been lined up and tacked to a welding table, angles calculated and tubes ready for next bends and welding together next week.



Engine removal will require the head coming off, but as its OHV that's no big drama.
 
What is the engine out of? How many cc, or whats the model?

I have a similar engine in my 3 wheeled project. Mine is a 4 speed with reverse.

It's the generic Lifan copy of the Honda CG 125 OHV. The one I have in my trials outfit has been upped to 150, gas flowed, hi comp, big bore exhaust and race CDI. It hauls two adults very nicely. This one will be bored and stroked to 200cc to maximise the torque. There is also a 250 version of this engine, both for quads and bikes, but weighing up various factors like front end design, existing braking system and restricted budget, I've decided to stick with this unit for now.

Not so simple. There are many variations in bore and stroke among the chinese engines. As an example, some "200's" have 63 mm pistons, and yet others have 69mm pistons, and obviously different strokes.

My 171FMM engine has a 71mm bore and a 58mm stroke. My kind of engine.

There is also a 167fmm 229cc that has a 67mm bore and a 65 mm stroke.

P.S. The cranks reportedly will swap. 71mm bore--65mm stroke, hmmm, now that sounds like even more fun, doesn't it?! 257cc

Oh yes. The trike will smoke the tires on command and quickly run to 65mph with the somewhat steep gearing before shes wrapped out. I show this engine no mercy. The quest for a smaller rear sprocket is likely going to end at a machine shop.
 
I knew there were 2 cranks available but I hadn't realised there were 3. Another reason for going for 200cc is that the Minimoto racing scene here in the UK have a class for up to 200. I'm building the bike to fall within ACU regs for track outfits so I don't close the door on that opportunity, not that I'm building it as a race bike primarily. I'd like to take it to the occasional track day, maybe even one of the gentler hillclimb events possibly, but mainly because I want to feel what an outfit with a very low C of G is like to drive. Taking my trials rig out round the lanes with my mate on monkey is way too much fun and the itch isnt going away.

In the UK there is an international company called Talon based in Yeovil who specialise in sprockets and will match up pretty much anything.
 
Bit of progress today, plenty of bending welding and grinding going down in the hood. Lots more to do but thanks to Beachcomber's guidance and my mate Jim with the glue gun I think I now have a viable chassis to work with.









Vital stastistics are currently:
Wheelbase 54" ish
Track 800mm
Toe in about 1/2"
Lead 13"
Lean in/out 0 degrees.
Ride height Dunno yet.
 
Looking good Steff ................. could I suggest a diagonal brace at the rear [ last pic ] from the top bend of the frame loop - approx 45 degrees down to the bend in the rear floor loop. Apologies if you already have this in hand.
